The LANXESS arena in Cologne will look different next summer. ESL, the organizer of Intel Extreme Masters, published the format of IEM Cologne 2027 on Thursday, October 1, 2026: the tournament runs from August 4 to 15, 2027, and its playoffs grow to eight teams spread over four days in the arena, around a central stage that fans see from every side. HLTV reported the plan the same afternoon and gave October 15 as the day the first wave of tickets goes on sale.

ESL calls the 2027 edition the biggest in the event's history, and presents it as its summer flagship among the events of the ESL Pro Tour Championship. The new format applies to Cologne the playoff model that ESL announced in March for all of its Counter-Strike 2 events of 2027.

ESL, IEM Cologne 2027 additional information, October 1, 2026: 16 teams in Stage 1 and 8 invited directly to Stage 2.

A stage in the middle of the arena

The most visible change is the stage itself. ESL writes that it is transforming the LANXESS arena into a central 360-degree stage, which puts the teams at the heart of the action for every fan to see. A 360-degree setup places the players in the middle of the hall, with the crowd around them. HLTV described it as a first for IEM Cologne.

ESL had already announced a stage of this kind for another event this year. When the organizer announced IEM Beijing 2026 on May 25, HLTV reported that the event, played from November 2 to 8 at the Bloomage Biotech Biohyalux ECM Arena, would also feature a 360-degree stage design. Beijing therefore comes before Cologne: fans in China see the format nine months before it reaches the German arena.

Eight teams and four days in front of the crowd

The playoffs are the part of the tournament played in the arena. ESL says it is dropping its old model to give fans more matches in the arena. The bracket becomes a single-elimination playoff of eight teams over four days, in which a loss ends a team's run. The competition in the arena starts on a Thursday, and two extra teams earn a place on the main stage for two additional quarterfinal matches in front of the crowd.

All matches are best-of-three, meaning the first team to win two maps takes the series, except the grand final, which is best-of-five, HLTV reported. A third-place decider, a match between the two losing semifinalists, is played right before the final.

The event's last day is Sunday, August 15, 2027. ESL's schedule for the teams also sets August 2 as the day of arrival, August 3 as a media day and August 16 as the day of departure.

  1. Arrival and media dayTeams arrive on August 2 and meet the press on August 3.
  2. Stage 1Sixteen teams play a double-elimination bracket. Eight go through.
  3. Stage 2The eight qualifiers join the eight best-ranked teams in two double-elimination groups.
  4. Arena playoffsThe top four of each group meet in an eight-team bracket over four days, from a Thursday.
  5. Final dayA third-place decider, then the best-of-five grand final on August 15.

Double elimination, the format of the first two stages, means a team is out only after two defeats. Those two stages are played on LAN, in person, like the rest of the event, ESL writes, and it names the LANXESS arena as the event's location.

How the 2027 edition compares

The change is easiest to read against the last two editions, which were of different kinds. IEM Cologne 2025 was a regular ESL tournament. The 2026 edition was a Major, the most important type of tournament in Counter-Strike, played with 32 teams over three stages before the playoffs.

In 2025, ESL's own preview described a field of 24 teams, 16 in Stage 1 and eight placed directly in Stage 2, with two groups of eight played in double elimination. The group winners went straight to the semifinals and the teams in second and third place to the quarterfinals. Six teams reached what the preview called a sold-out LANXESS arena for the last three days of the tournament, from August 1 to 3, 2025.

The 2025 calendar shows how the days were spent. Stage 1 ran from July 23 to 25, Stage 2 from July 26 to 29, and the arena playoffs from August 1 to 3, with best-of-three quarterfinals and semifinals and a best-of-five final. From the first match to the final, that edition lasted 12 days. The 2027 edition, from August 4 to 15, also lasts 12 days, but four of them are now arena days instead of three, which leaves eight days for the two stages before the playoffs.

The 2027 edition keeps the 24 teams and the two stages before the arena. What changes is the cut between the groups and the playoffs: four teams per group go through instead of three, and no group winner skips the quarterfinals. That is where the two extra quarterfinal matches come from.

The Major of 2026 had already shown the four-day arena format. Its three stages ran from June 2 to 15 with 32 teams. ESL FACEIT Group said on June 21 that 67,000 fans from more than 75 countries attended over nine tournament days across the sold-out LANXESS arena and the Palladium, a second venue in the city, and that fans could watch Stage 3 live for the first time in IEM Cologne history. Its eight-team playoffs were played at the LANXESS arena from June 18 to 21. The 2027 edition gives a regular, non-Major Cologne that same length of arena week.

Who gets in, and when it is decided

ESL fills 20 of the 24 places from the Valve Regional Standings, the VRS, the ranking published by Valve that organizers use to send invitations. Stage 2 receives the teams ranked first to eighth. Stage 1 receives the teams ranked ninth to 20th, plus four wildcard invitations, places the organizer hands out at its own choice.

The invitations are based on the first monthly VRS publication of June 2027, and the seeding, the order in which teams are placed in the brackets, on the first monthly publication of July 2027. ESL adds that an invitation may be adjusted if a player has been banned by ESL, by FACEIT or by the Esports Integrity Commission, an integrity body of the scene.

The money and the calendar

IEM Cologne 2027 carries total winnings of US$1,250,000, the same total as the 2025 edition. ESL splits it into US$1,000,000 of prize money and US$250,000 of club reward, a second payment by final placing that goes to the clubs.

The winner receives US$420,000 of prize money and US$80,000 of club reward, and the runner-up US$200,000 and US$40,000. Third place takes US$100,000 and US$30,000, fourth US$50,000 and US$20,000, and each team placed fifth to eighth US$25,000 and US$15,000. Further down, teams ninth to 12th receive US$15,000 and US$5,000, and the last 12 places receive prize money only: US$10,000, US$5,000 and US$2,500 for each block of four. The scale is the one ESL published in March for IEM Krakow 2027.

That March announcement set the frame for the whole season. On March 25, 2026, ESL wrote that starting with IEM Krakow, all of its 2027 events would have eight teams in the playoffs, and said that Counter-Strike is at its best when experienced live, in person, rather than in a studio without an audience. It also said that playoff viewership would now count in its Annual Club Incentive, the yearly allocation that ESL shares among its 16 best-ranked teams. Until then, each team had been given one viewership value per event, drawn from a stage before the playoffs; from 2027, ESL wrote, the combined average concurrent viewership of the entire tournament decides the points. ESL's October page confirms that Cologne counts toward that incentive, so under the March rule the audience of the whole tournament, arena days included, sets a team's viewership points.

On the calendar, Cologne fills the fifth slot of ESL's 2027 season. When HLTV printed that calendar on July 1, 2026, the fifth event, from August 2 to 15, had no location yet. The new dates fit that block exactly, with arrival on August 2.

Tickets from October 15

For fans, the first date is much closer than the tournament. The first wave of tickets goes on sale on Thursday, October 15, 2026, almost ten months before the event, HLTV reported. Neither ESL's page nor HLTV's report gives prices, the number of waves or which days each ticket covers.

Before Cologne, ESL's 2027 season opens with IEM Krakow, from January 27 to February 7, the first event played under the eight-team playoff model.
