Sixty-seven thousand people watched the IEM Cologne Major in person. ESL FACEIT Group, the company that organizes the Intel Extreme Masters circuit, gave the figure in its closing release of Sunday, June 21, 2026, updated on June 23: fans from more than 75 countries attended over nine tournament days, in two buildings it described as sold out, the LANXESS arena and the Palladium.
It was the first Major of Counter-Strike 2 in 2026. A Major is one of the championship tournaments of Counter-Strike sponsored by Valve, the developer of the game, and this one brought the event back to Cologne for the first time in ten years. It was also the first time in the history of IEM Cologne that fans could watch Stage 3, the last qualifying phase, from the stands.

Two buildings, nine days
The Major ran for three weeks, from June 2 to June 21, but only part of it was played in front of a crowd. ESL's schedule, published on February 23, set four phases: Stage 1 from June 2 to 5, Stage 2 from June 6 to 9, Stage 3 from June 11 to 15, and the playoffs from June 18 to 21.
Thirty-two teams took part, all of them invited. ESL's announcement of August 2025 said the invitations would follow the Valve Regional Standings, Valve's ranking of teams by region, with the number of places per region based on results at the 2025 Winter Major, and that the first update of the standings in April 2026 would fix the list. Eight of the 32 reached the arena.

Stage 3 was played at the Palladium, a Cologne venue that ESL named as the onsite home of that stage. The playoffs moved to the LANXESS arena, the indoor arena that ESL calls the Cathedral of Counter-Strike.
| Phase | Dates | Venue | Tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | June 2 to 5 | No venue named by ESL | Outside the nine crowd days |
| Stage 2 | June 6 to 9 | No venue named by ESL | Outside the nine crowd days |
| Stage 3 | June 11 to 15 | Palladium | Sold out |
| Playoffs | June 18 to 21 | LANXESS arena | Sold out |

The nine days with a live audience in ESL's count match those two phases exactly: five days of Stage 3 and four days of playoffs. Spread evenly, 67,000 spectators over nine days would be about 7,400 a day, but ESL gave no figure per day or per building.
Bigger than ESL's own forecast
When ESL announced the Major on August 3, 2025, it expected more than 50,000 fans from over 70 countries to attend in person. The closing figures passed both marks. The crowd came out 17,000 people above the minimum ESL had forecast, or 34 percent more, and the number of countries rose from over 70 to more than 75.
ESL, Major announcement of August 3, 2025, and ESL FACEIT Group closing release of June 21, 2026. The forecast was given as a minimum.
The forecast predates the public days of Stage 3. When ESL made it, the only crowd days it had described were the four days of playoffs at the LANXESS arena, and no ticket was on sale yet: the announcement told fans that ticket news and more information would follow. ESL's page on the Palladium days and their ticket sale came six months later, on February 23, 2026.
Stage 3 opens its doors
ESL's page of February 23 was first a format change: every match of Stage 3 would be a best-of-three, a series won by the first team to take two maps, a map being one full game of Counter-Strike. ESL presented a stage played entirely in that format as a first in the history of the game. To fit the longer matches, the stage gained a day and ran over five days instead of four, from Thursday, June 11 to Monday, June 15.

The schedule for spectators at the Palladium listed four series on each of the first three days and three on each of the last two, 18 series in all. Each day held one round of the stage, from Round 1 on the Thursday to Round 5 on the Monday. Tickets went on sale on Thursday, February 26 at 15:00 Central European Time, through the ticketing platform vivenu, more than three months before the first day at the Palladium.
Demand had already run ahead of the plan. ESL said that both Stage 3 and the playoffs had sold out in record time, and that it was adding inventory for the Stage 3 days already on sale as well as selling the new day of June 11. By the end of the event, ESL counted the stage as a first in the history of IEM Cologne: the first time its Stage 3 had a live audience.
The Palladium crowd watched the field shrink to the eight teams that would move to the arena. ESL's closing release singled out two of the runs that ended there: BetBoom became only the second team in Major history to come through every stage of the competition to the playoffs, and 9z reached the playoffs of a Major for the first time in the organization's history.
The 67,000 covers both buildings together
ESL gave one total for the nine days at the Palladium and the LANXESS arena. Its release gives no figure per day, no split between the two venues and no capacity for either building.
The arena weekend
The playoffs gave the LANXESS arena four days of play for the last eight teams: quarterfinals on Thursday, June 18 and Friday, June 19, semifinals on Saturday, June 20 and the grand final on Sunday, June 21, as ESL had set out in August 2025. ESL's closing release described the opening of the arena as the Cathedral of Counter-Strike opening its doors to thousands of fans.

The prize pool was US$1,250,000. The title also gave Team Falcons a point in ESL Grand Slam VII, a US$1,000,000 prize that ESL pays to a team winning three ESL Pro Tour Masters titles and one ESL Pro Tour Championship title within ten consecutive events. The Major carried the weight of a Championship tournament, ESL said in August 2025. A Grand Slam takes four titles in all, so the Cologne win gave Team Falcons the first of the four it would need, the Championship one. ESL wrote on May 8 that the race had reset at IEM Atlanta, May 11 to 17, after Team Vitality completed the previous Grand Slam, its second in a row, by beating Team Spirit 3-0 at IEM Rio. The first event of the new race, IEM Atlanta, went to Natus Vincere, whom ESL's closing release described as the recent IEM Atlanta champions.
Cologne's fourth Major
Cologne has a long history with the competition. ESL's announcement of August 2025 listed the three Majors already played in the city: in 2014, won by Ninjas in Pyjamas; in 2015, won by Fnatic; and in 2016, won by SK Gaming. The 2026 edition was the fourth, ten years after the third, and the 24th Major of Counter-Strike overall.
One player tied the two eras together. ESL's release noted that FalleN returned to the Major stage in Cologne ten years after lifting the trophy there with SK Gaming, the team that ESL lists as the 2016 winner.
It was also ESL's eleventh Major as an organizer, a series that began with DreamHack Winter in 2013. The organizer's closing release presented the 2026 edition as the Major's return to the most famous stages of Counter-Strike after ten years, and called it the best Counter-Strike esports event to date, setting the sold-out buildings beside the online figures.
The audience at home
The crowd was one part of the count. ESL reported more than 100 million hours watched across the event and a peak above 2,750,000 viewers at one time, both figures from Esports Charts, a company that measures audiences of streamed competitions. On those figures, the organizer called the Major the most-watched Counter-Strike tournament ever. Hours watched add up the time spent by every viewer on every stream; the peak is the largest number of people watching at the same moment.
The broadcast reached that audience in many languages: ESL planned coverage in more than 20 of them when it announced the event.
What comes next
ESL's release named the circuit's next stop: ESL Pro League Season 24, at the Spodek Arena in Katowice, Poland.
