The world championship of PUBG: Battlegrounds has its host city for 2026. PUBG Esports, the competitive arm of the game's publisher Krafton, announced on May 19, 2026 that the PUBG Global Championship 2026, known as the PGC, will be held in Istanbul, Turkiye, from Tuesday, December 1 to Sunday, December 13.

Thirty-two teams will take part, over nine match days, and the base prize pool is US$1.5 million, before the money fans add through crowdfunding. The host country also has a place of its own: one of the 32 places is a wildcard reserved for a team representing Turkiye.

PUBG Esports announcement of May 19, 2026.

A city named, a building still to come

The announcement is about the city. It does not name the venue, the ticketing arrangements or any local partner. Those, like the way fans will be able to contribute to the crowdfunding, are left for later communication through PUBG Esports' official channels.

What it does settle is the shape of the event. The PGC is where, in the announcement's words, the final standings and the year's global champion are decided. Each team's starting stage depends on its results over the season in the PUBG Global Series, the publisher's international circuit, and in the regional leagues. Istanbul is where those results now lead.

PUBG: Battlegrounds is a battle royale, a game in which many teams play each match on the same map at once. A PUBG championship is therefore not a bracket of head-to-head series: 16 teams share every match of the Grand Finals, and the standings come from the points each team accumulates over the days.

From Bangkok to Istanbul

The 2025 edition was played in Asia. PUBG Esports announced on September 25, 2025 that the PGC 2025 would be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 28 to December 14, 2025, across two buildings: the Group Stage and the Last Stage at CentralWorld PULSE Bangkok, and the Grand Finals at Siam Paragon Bangkok. The prize pool was US$1.5 million, plus crowdfunding.

The 2026 calendar is close to that one. Both editions are set at the end of the year and both run for about two weeks or more: 17 days in 2025, from November 28 to December 14, and 13 days in 2026, from December 1 to 13, nine of them with matches. The base prize pool is the same, US$1.5 million in both years.

What changes is the region. After Bangkok, the event moves to Turkiye. It is not the only world championship heading to Turkiye this winter. In January 2026, Moonton, the publisher of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, announced that the finals of its M8 World Championship would be held in Turkiye in January 2027, the first event of its M Series held in Europe. Moonton's release did not name a Turkish city.

The end of a ten-month season

Istanbul is the last stop of a calendar PUBG Esports laid out on February 9, 2026, in its season roadmap. The PUBG Global Series runs from March through December in four Global Circuits of three series each, twelve series in all, with US$2 million in prize money across them. Regional Series 1 is set for April and Regional Series 2 for September. The PUBG Nations Cup, played by national teams, comes in June, and the PUBG tournament of the Esports World Cup in July. The PGC closes the year in December.

The roadmap already fixed the principle of the Istanbul field: 32 teams, eight of them through PUBG Global Series points and 24 through the Regional Series, allocated by region, with 16 reaching the Grand Finals. The May 19 announcement keeps the totals of 32 and 16 and adds the detail: which region holds how many places, at which stage each team enters, and the host wildcard.

The same roadmap introduced Regional Cups with prize pools of about US$130,000 in total, and an annual support line of US$1 million for the publisher's partner teams. Neither figure is part of the PGC prize pool.

For fans who plan to travel, the 2025 edition gives an idea of the timing. PUBG Esports opened ticket sales for the Bangkok Grand Finals on November 20, 2025, through the Ticketmelon platform, a little over three weeks before the Grand Finals began on December 12. The announcement for Istanbul gives no ticket date.

How the event is played

PUBG Esports split the event into three stages. The first two decide who reaches the last weekend; the third decides the champion.

The three stages of the PGC 2026
  1. Qualifying Stage, December 1The 16 teams seeded here play one day. The top eight go to Survival Stage Day 1, the other eight to Day 2.
  2. Survival Stage, December 2 to 6Five days of 16 teams. The winner of each of the first four days goes to the Grand Finals, then the four best on cumulative points join them.
  3. Grand Finals, December 11 to 13Sixteen teams, 15 matches over three days, five a day. The final standings decide the world champion.

The last day of the Survival Stage works differently from the first four. On December 6, the 16 teams with the most cumulative points from Days 1 to 4 meet again for the last four places in the Grand Finals. Between the end of the Survival Stage on Sunday, December 6, and the first day of the Grand Finals on Friday, December 11, the schedule leaves four days without play.

The 16 teams of the Grand Finals come from three routes, according to the announcement. Eight are invited directly: the six first-placed teams of the regional leagues, the team that finishes first in the PUBG Global Series standings, and the host wildcard. Four are the daily winners of the Survival Stage. The last four are the best of that stage on total points.

The format is a departure from the one used in Bangkok. In 2025, according to PUBG Esports' announcement of that edition, the 32 teams were split into two groups, A and B, for a six-day Group Stage. The top five of each group went straight to the Grand Finals, the middle eight of each group went to a three-day Last Stage, and the bottom three of each group were eliminated. The Last Stage sent five more teams through, and a regional wildcard completed a Grand Finals field of 16: ten from the groups, five from the Last Stage and one wildcard. In 2026, the groups give way to a single Qualifying day and a five-day Survival Stage built around daily winners.

Where the 32 teams come from

The 32 places are shared between the global circuit and the regions. Eight go to the PUBG Global Series, through its points standings, and 23 to seven regional leagues, each named by its own acronym in the announcement. The last place is the wildcard of the host region.

PUBG Esports, May 19, 2026. The nine lines add up to 32.

The seeds are not all equal. Depending on its results in the PUBG Global Series and in its regional league, a team enters at one of three levels: directly in the Grand Finals (eight teams), directly on Survival Stage Day 1 (eight teams), or in the Qualifying Stage (16 teams). A team that qualifies through both its region and the global circuit takes the higher of the two entry points; when both lead to the same stage, its PUBG Global Series points decide. A seed left unused by such a double qualification passes to the next team in that region's PGC points standings.

The wildcard for Turkiye is one of the eight direct invitations to the Grand Finals. A team representing the host region therefore plays the last weekend in Istanbul without going through the Qualifying or Survival stages. The announcement does not say how that team will be chosen.

The prize money and the crowdfunding

The base prize pool has two parts. The Ranking Prize, US$1,310,000, is paid by Grand Finals qualification and by final standing, and it includes guaranteed minimum amounts for the teams that do not reach the Grand Finals. The Special Prize, US$190,000, rewards standout performances during the Grand Finals. Together they make the US$1.5 million of the announcement.

Crowdfunding comes on top. The money fans contribute is paid only to the top eight teams of the Grand Finals, on a sliding scale by final placement that runs from 30 percent down to 4 percent. PUBG Esports' announcement says that the more fans take part, the larger the pool and the rewards for the leading clubs become. It does not give a target, a price or a start date for the contributions.

The 2025 edition in Bangkok used the same principle: its US$1.5 million was announced with Pick'em crowdfunding on top.

What comes next

The road to Istanbul runs through the rest of the 2026 season. The regional leagues and the PUBG Global Series still have to produce the champions and the standings that fill the 32 places, and the PGC points standings will decide any seed that goes unused.

For the host city, the next steps belong to the organizer. PUBG Esports said that further details will follow, which covers the venue, the tickets and the partners of the event. The first match is set for Tuesday, December 1, with the Qualifying Stage, and the world champion is decided on Sunday, December 13, after the fifth match of the last day of the Grand Finals.
