Counter-Strike has clubs, not countries: its biggest tournaments are played by organizations that sign five players of any passport. On Sunday, February 8, 2026, the Esports World Cup Foundation announced that Counter-Strike 2 will be one of the games of the Esports Nations Cup, the national team competition it is preparing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. HLTV, the news site that follows Counter-Strike, and Sheep Esports both reported the announcement that day.

The tournament brings 24 national teams to Riyadh from November 10 to 15, 2026, for a prize pool that HLTV gives as US$1,320,000. Before that, the foundation plans national qualifiers in 96 countries and territories in July, and a ranking of nations that did not exist until now.

The seventh game of sixteen

The Esports Nations Cup is planned from November 2 to 29, 2026, with 16 games on its program, according to Sheep Esports. Counter-Strike 2 is the seventh to be revealed, the outlet counted, after Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Dota 2, Fatal Fury, Trackmania, chess and Honor of Kings.

The event is the national team counterpart of the Esports World Cup, the foundation's summer competition for clubs. That one was announced on January 20 for Riyadh as well, from July 6 to August 23, 2026, with US$75 million in prize money and 25 tournaments in 24 games. Counter-Strike 2 is part of both.

In its press release, the foundation drew a line between the two events. It recalled that the Counter-Strike 2 final of the 2025 Esports World Cup was played between two clubs whose line-ups each came from a single country: Aurora Gaming, with five Turkish players, and The MongolZ, with five Mongolian players, who won in what the release called a clean sweep. A map is one game of Counter-Strike, played on one of the arenas of the game; a match is made of one, three or five of them. The Esports Nations Cup makes line-ups of that kind the rule.

The foundation also cited a figure from Esports Charts, a firm that measures audiences: more than 584.7 million hours of Counter-Strike 2 watched around the world. It expects more than 15,000 players, in more than 3,000 teams, to enter the qualifiers.

Six days in Riyadh

The tournament itself is short. It runs from November 10 to November 15, HLTV reported.

The 24 teams are first placed in four groups of six. Each group is a round-robin, which means every team plays each of the other five once. These matches are best-of-one: a single map decides them. The top four of each group, 16 teams in all, move on. The last two of each group go home, so eight of the 24 nations leave after the group stage.

The 16 that remain enter a single-elimination bracket, where one defeat ends the tournament. The matches are best-of-three, won by the first team to take two maps, and the grand final is a best-of-five, won by the first to take three.

The foundation compared this with the format of its club tournament. At the 2026 Esports World Cup, Counter-Strike 2 opens with a qualifier played on site, then a group stage of 32 teams in double elimination, where a team is out after two defeats, and ends with a single-elimination bracket of 16. The national event keeps the same last phase and replaces what comes before it with groups, which guarantee every nation five matches.

A ranking of nations built from club points

To seed national teams, the foundation has created the CS2 National Team Ranking, a list computed from a ranking that already exists.

That ranking is the Valve Regional Standings, known as the VRS. Valve, the publisher of Counter-Strike, uses it to rank clubs from their results. In the foundation's method, as HLTV described it, the points a club holds are shared equally among the players who earned them. Each player thus carries a personal total. A nation's score is the sum of the totals of its five best players, and the release adds a limit: no more than three of the five may come from the same club. The count is taken on June 1, 2026.

A country whose players do not appear in Valve's standings is not left out. For those nations and rosters, FACEIT Elo is the second mechanism, according to HLTV. FACEIT is an online platform where Counter-Strike players compete outside tournaments, and Elo is the score it gives each of them.

The ranking has two uses, the site explained: it decides which countries and territories receive a national qualifier, and it sets the seeding inside those qualifiers, that is, the order in which teams are placed in the bracket so that the strongest do not meet at once. The press release adds that seeding starts from Valve's standings of June for the qualifiers and from those of October for the tournament in Riyadh.

Roster rule

Three players from one club, at most, in a national team

A national roster holds only players with the citizenship of the country they represent. For clubs that appear in the Valve Regional Standings on June 1, 2026, no more than three players of the same club may be registered in one national team.

Two stages of qualifiers in July

Nobody is invited to Riyadh. The 24 places are all won in a qualifier in two stages that runs from July 6 to 19, 2026.

The road to the 24 places
  1. National qualifiersSingle-elimination tournaments in 96 countries and territories. Each one sends a single team forward.
  2. Regional qualifiersThe national winners of a region meet in a double-elimination bracket for that region's places.
  3. Riyadh, November 10 to 15The 24 qualified nations play four groups of six, then a 16-team bracket.

The first stage is national. In each of the 96 countries and territories, teams made of citizens of that country play a single-elimination tournament, and the winner becomes the national team. Each of these tournaments has room for at least 32 teams, and up to 64 in the larger nations, according to the press release. The dates overlap with the first two weeks of the Esports World Cup, which opens on July 6.

The second stage is regional. The world is divided into ten regions, and the winners of the national qualifiers of a region play each other in a double-elimination bracket. The number of national qualifiers and the number of places in Riyadh were fixed for each region in advance.

HLTV and the organizer's press release, February 8, 2026.

Europe as a whole holds 32 of the 96 national qualifiers and eight of the 24 places. The two Americas hold 16 qualifiers and six places. The chances are not the same everywhere: one national winner in four goes through in Western and Eastern Europe, three in eight in North and South America, and one in eight in South and Central Africa.

What it changes for players and clubs

A professional player is under contract with a club all year. A national team borrows him, and the rules announced on February 8 deal with that directly.

The first rule is citizenship: a roster contains only players who hold the citizenship of the country it represents. The second is the limit of three players per club. A ranked club made of five players of one country therefore cannot enter as that country's national team: at least two places go to players of other clubs.

In return, a club that lets players go can gain something. According to HLTV, a club that gives three players of its core line-up to a national team can earn points in the Valve Regional Standings through the Esports Nations Cup. The event is classified as Tier 2 in Valve's system, both reports said.

Not every country can enter. Russia and Belarus are barred from the team competitions of the Esports Nations Cup, though not from its individual events, Sheep Esports reported, a line the outlet said follows the regulations of the International Olympic Committee, which the foundation largely applies.

The money behind the national teams

The Counter-Strike 2 prize pool belongs to a larger plan. On January 30, 2026, the foundation presented the financial model of the Esports Nations Cup, worth US$45 million, as Sheep Esports reported that day. It has three parts: US$20 million in prize money for players and coaches across the 16 games, US$20 million in a development fund for national delegations, meant for logistics, operations and marketing, and US$5 million for professional clubs.

The prize money is paid per player and is the same in every game, whether it is played alone or in a team, the outlet wrote: US$50,000 to each world champion, US$30,000 to each silver medalist and US$15,000 to each bronze medalist. The share reserved for clubs works as a compensation for releasing players. A club receives a payment equal to 40 percent of what its players win, provided they finish in the top 16 of their game.

Ralf Reichert, the chief executive of the foundation, said in that announcement that clubs are the cultural backbone of esports, and that competition between nations gives more fans a reason to care.

What comes next

Three dates are fixed for Counter-Strike 2. On June 1, the count of points that produces the CS2 National Team Ranking is taken. From July 6 to 19, the national and regional qualifiers are played. On November 10, the 24 qualified nations start in Riyadh, and the tournament ends on November 15.

For the Esports Nations Cup as a whole, nine of the 16 games have yet to be named.
