Two days after its last qualifier ended, the first Esports Nations Cup lost its date. The Esports Foundation announced on the morning of Tuesday, August 18, 2026 that the inaugural edition of its national team competition, planned in Riyadh from November 2 to 29, 2026, is postponed to November 2027. Sheep Esports reported the statement that morning, and so did HLTV, the news site that follows Counter-Strike.
The Esports Nations Cup was to be the first event of its size played by countries instead of clubs: 16 games, around 100 nations expected and qualifiers that had run all summer. The foundation gave no exact dates inside November 2027. It said the details that matter most to the teams already qualified would follow in the coming weeks.
Sheep Esports, August 18, 2026. The qualifiers ended on August 16.
What the foundation announced
The decision is a postponement of one year, not a cancellation. According to the statement as reported by Sheep Esports, the organizing committee took it after an ongoing assessment of the wider regional situation and after consulting its key stakeholders. HLTV summed up the reason the foundation gave as the uncertainty created by that situation. Neither report quotes any further explanation from the foundation.
Ralf Reichert, the chief executive of the Esports Foundation, said the decision had not been taken lightly, and that the response to the project had shown how much potential the competition has. "We owe them an inaugural ENC delivered under the right conditions and at the level this idea deserves," he said in the statement printed by Sheep Esports. ENC is the event's abbreviation.

The postponement does not change its commitments to existing partners and stakeholders, Sheep Esports reported. And over the coming weeks it will work with national team partners, publishers and other stakeholders on what follows from the new timeline.
The statement does not say what happens to the places already won
The foundation said it would clarify the revised calendar, the qualification pathways and the other implications of the new date over the coming weeks. On August 18 it had confirmed neither exact dates nor the status of the qualified teams.
A competition built in twelve months
The Esports Nations Cup was announced in August 2025 as the national team counterpart of the Esports World Cup, the foundation's summer festival for clubs, Sheep Esports recalled. From the start of 2026 the foundation set up the structure a national team needs before it has players.
That structure rests on two roles. A National Team Partner is a group of organizations, companies or individuals from a country that takes charge of its national representation; it appoints a National Team Manager, who approves the coaches of each game. On March 25, 2026, the foundation named an alliance of six Brazilian clubs, Fluxo W7M, FURIA, LOUD, MIBR, paiN Gaming and Red Canids, as Brazil's partner, and selected a joint bid of Spanish clubs and a league organizer for Spain, Sheep Esports reported that day. The same report gave the calendar of the first cycle: coaches for each game approved by March 31, players chosen by the end of April.
The rosters followed. All line-ups, for every game and every nation, have been locked since May, according to Sheep Esports, and the qualifiers began at the end of that month.

What the qualifiers had already decided
The postponement arrives with the field complete. The last qualifier, in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, a mobile team game, ended on August 16, Sheep Esports wrote. A day later, on August 17, the outlet published its count of the places won, based on the event's website and on the community wiki Liquipedia.

The United States was the only one qualified in all 16 games. China and France followed with 14 each, then Brazil, Argentina, Canada and Germany with 13. Most games had two ways in, the outlet explained: continental qualifying tournaments, or the event's own Team Ranking, which awarded points for results on official circuits to the players each nation's managers had selected. Two games, Counter-Strike 2 and Apex Legends, were filled through open qualifiers only, with players forming their own teams.
Three of the tournaments show how far the preparation had gone.
| Game | Planned dates in Riyadh | Field | Qualifiers played |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | November 10 to 15 | 24 national teams, all through qualifiers | July 6 to 19 |
| Valorant | November 8 to 15 | 16 invited on ranking, 14 through eight regional qualifiers | June 26 to 28 |
| Rocket League | November | 48 planned: 24 invited, 22 through qualifiers, 2 solidarity slots | July 17 to 19 |
HLTV, February 8 and July 20, 2026, for Counter-Strike 2; Sheep Esports, June 28 and July 21, 2026, for Valorant and Rocket League.
The Counter-Strike 2 tournament is the most documented. When it was announced in February, HLTV reported a prize pool of US$1,320,000 and a qualifier in two stages: national qualifiers in 96 countries and territories, then regional qualifiers for the 24 places. The places were shared out by region in advance, from four each for Western and Eastern Europe to one each for North Africa, for South and Central Africa and for Oceania. On July 20, the site published the full list. The format was fixed as well: four groups of six playing each other once in single games, the top four of each group moving to a knockout bracket played as best-of-three series, which are won by the first team to take two maps, and a final over five maps. The list of teams runs from the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Germany, Romania, Lithuania, Poland and Bulgaria to Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Canada, Chile and Mexico, and includes Kazakhstan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, China, Mongolia, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa, Morocco and Australia.

Its 24 invitations went to the nations whose three best players had earned the most points in 2026 on the RLCS, the game's professional circuit, and its two solidarity slots were reserved for eligible countries that had not qualified in more than one game of the event. One of the 22 qualifier places, a host-region slot, went to the United Arab Emirates as the highest-ranked Gulf Cooperation Council nation that had not come through the Middle East qualifier.
In Valorant, a team shooter, the eight regional qualifiers of June 26 to 28 sent 14 nations to join the 16 invited on the event's ranking: Vietnam, New Zealand, Japan, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Czechia, France, Denmark, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, according to Sheep Esports.
The players, the clubs and the partners
A national team event reaches further than a club tournament, because the people it involves belong to someone else for the rest of the year.
The players come first. Those who went through open qualifiers in Counter-Strike 2 formed their own national squads; HLTV noted in July that some of the 24 teams combined players from different clubs. In most other games the players were selected by national managers appointed earlier in the year. All of them won or were given a place in an event that was three months away, and now is fifteen months away.
The national partners come next. In Brazil and Spain, clubs that compete against each other all year joined to run a national team. The partner's job, as Sheep Esports described it in March, is to coordinate the national representation, support the coaches of each game, deal with publishers and clubs, and bring local communities along through marketing, creators and public institutions. In many countries there is no such partner: Mohammed Al Nimer, the foundation's chief commercial officer, said in an interview reported by Sheep Esports on August 14 that some nations had only a single manager.

Jerseys were to be sold on the event's website and in stores, Al Nimer said. The statement of August 18, as reported, says only that commitments to existing partners are unchanged.
A second change to the foundation's 2026 calendar
The Esports Nations Cup is not the first event of the foundation to leave its planned place in the 2026 calendar. On May 20, the Esports World Cup 2026 was moved from Riyadh to Paris, with its games and formats kept as announced. HLTV recalled that relocation in its report of the postponement.
The two decisions differ in kind. The club festival is being played this summer in another city. The national team event gives up its year, and the statement, as reported, names no new city. For national teams, the nearest date already set is another event altogether: the Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, which the Olympic Council of Asia has scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026, with eleven esports titles on the program.
What comes next
The next step announced by the foundation is its own communication. Over the coming weeks it is to give the revised calendar, the qualification pathways and the other consequences of the new date, after working with national team partners and publishers.
Until then, three things are established: the first Esports Nations Cup is planned for November 2027, no day has been set, and the rosters locked in May were built for a tournament that will not be played this year.
The name this event could hold, on the bracket and everywhere else.
