Gen.G beat LYON 3-0 on Wednesday, November 4, in the second quarterfinal of the League of Legends World Championship in Allen, Texas, according to Field Level Media and Esports News UK. The best-of-five series, a match in which the first team to win three games advances, ended without a fourth game. Gen.G now plays Invictus Gaming in the semifinals on Saturday, November 7, as Esports News UK reported.
For LYON, the result closes a tournament that GosuGamers called its best Worlds finish to date. The team ends in the 5th to 8th place tier, and Strafe's preview had described it as the last North American team still in the field. For Gen.G, the sweep continues a Swiss stage that it finished without a series loss and sets up a rematch against a team it has already beaten once at this event.
Game lengths of 32, 27 and 33 minutes come from Field Level Media and Esports News UK; the placement prize is from the prize table Field Level Media printed on November 5, 2026.
Three games, no fourth
Field Level Media's recap gives the length of each game: 32 minutes, 27 minutes and 33 minutes. Esports News UK, whose report was published on November 5, listed the same three lengths and noted that the 27-minute second game was the quickest of the series. Added together, the three games lasted 92 minutes.
Field Level Media also printed a few player lines. Its recap lists Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk of Gen.G at 15-3-21 and Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon at 15-5-23. For LYON it lists Kacper "Inspired" Sloma at 8-13-9. Those three numbers are kills, deaths and assists, the standard way League of Legends results are summarized for a player. On those lines, both Gen.G players finished with far more kills and assists than deaths, while Inspired's 13 deaths outnumbered his 8 kills.

GosuGamers gave the match day as Thursday, November 5, which matches the Korean sports site's schedule listing the match on the 5th in Korea, while Field Level Media and Esports News UK report that it was played on Wednesday in the United States. A Strafe preview had scheduled it for 2 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday. The series was played in Allen, Texas, where Field Level Media said the knockout matches are held, with the exception of the grand final.
How the Swiss stage led here
The quarterfinal followed a Swiss stage, a format in which teams are paired against opponents with the same record rather than set into fixed groups. Field Level Media said 16 teams began play in the US$5 million event and half of them qualified for the single-elimination playoff bracket. A preview from EarlyGame listed Hanwha Life Esports, LOS and Movistar KOI as the teams that finished the Swiss stage 2-3 and were eliminated.
Gen.G and LYON met in the third round. A report from Inven Global, published on October 25, described the series: LYON won the first game after taking a surprise Baron, the powerful neutral objective that boosts a team's push into the enemy base, and then closing out the game. Gen.G took the second game after building a lead of more than 5,000 gold and three dragon stacks by the 19th minute, the same report said, and it then won the third to take the series 2-1. The Korean sports site described the result as a come-from-behind win for Gen.G.

The same Korean site wrote on November 2 that Gen.G finished the stage 3-0 and dropped only one set, to LYON, which matches the account of a lost first game. In the earlier rounds, Esports News UK reported, Gen.G beat Invictus Gaming 1-0 in Round 1 and Hanwha Life Esports 1-0 in Round 2.
LYON's route was longer, and it needed its last Swiss series to get through, according to Esports News UK.
- Round 1Beat Team Secret Whales.
- Round 2Beat Karmine Corp for a 2-0 record.
- Round 3Lost 2-1 to Gen.G on October 25.
- Round 4Lost 2-1 to Invictus Gaming.
- Round 5Beat LOS 2-1 to finish 3-2.
LYON's fifth-round win over LOS, Esports News UK reported, put it into the playoff bracket.
A meeting between familiar sides
The Korean sports site reported on November 2 that the two teams had met in the First Stand group stage in March, where Gen.G swept LYON 3-0, and then in the Worlds Swiss round, where Gen.G recovered from a game down. The quarterfinal was their third meeting in the two events the Korean site mentioned.
In those three series, Gen.G has won 8 games to LYON's 1: three games at First Stand, two in the Swiss round and three in the quarterfinal for Gen.G, against the single game LYON took on October 25. Esports News UK made the same point about this event: LYON's only game win over Gen.G here came in the Round 3 series.
The Strafe preview added another thread. It noted that Inspired, now on LYON, led FlyQuest to one of North America's better recent Worlds showings in 2024, and that FlyQuest led Gen.G 2-1 in that year's quarterfinals before losing the series. GosuGamers, in its recap of that series, put the final score at 3-2 for Gen.G and dated the match to Sunday, October 20, 2024. This year's meeting at the same stage took three games instead of five.

GosuGamers described the result as LYON's best Worlds finish to date and said the team had reached its first-ever knockout stage at Worlds. The same recap noted that LYON had never placed above 17th in its four earlier Worlds appearances. Field Level Media's table, printed after the series, lists LYON in the 5th to 8th tier alongside Top Esports, which lost its own quarterfinal to Invictus Gaming, and two teams still to be decided. Strafe's preview had called LYON the last remaining team from the LCS, North America's league, so the sweep ends the region's run at this Worlds.
The placement comes with a payment, and Field Level Media's recap prints the prize table below.
| Finish | Prize per team | Teams named in the recap |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | US$1,000,000 | To be decided |
| 2nd | US$800,000 | To be decided |
| 3rd-4th | US$400,000 | To be decided |
| 5th-8th | US$300,000 | LYON, Top Esports, two to be decided |
| 9th-11th | US$175,000 | Hanwha Life Esports, LOS, Movistar KOI |
Field Level Media, November 5, 2026, for a US$5 million prize pool; lower tiers are left out of this table.
Gen.G's own guarantee is the third-and-fourth tier. GosuGamers wrote that the result assures the team at least that placement and US$400,000.
Gen.G's recent Worlds history
The sweep puts Gen.G back in the Worlds semifinals. It also reached the semifinals in 2024 and 2025. In 2024 Gen.G beat FlyQuest in the quarterfinals and then lost to T1 by 3-1 in the semifinals, GosuGamers reported, finishing 3rd to 4th. In 2025, Field Level Media reported on October 28 that Gen.G beat Hanwha Life Esports 3-1 in the knockout stage to earn a semifinal spot. Field Level Media reported on November 1, 2025, that Gen.G then lost that semifinal to KT Rolster. GosuGamers' recap of that series gave the score as 3-1 for KT Rolster and Gen.G's placement as 3rd to 4th.
A Korean sports news site noted before the Worlds 2026 quarterfinal that Gen.G has not reached a Worlds final since the organization's 2018 change from Samsung Galaxy to Gen.G. The Strafe preview made a similar point, noting that Chovy has not lifted the Worlds trophy.
Esports News UK noted that Gen.G beat Hanwha Life Esports 3-1 twice in the LCK before the tournament.
The semifinal against Invictus Gaming
Invictus Gaming reached the semifinals a day earlier. Esports News UK reported that it beat Top Esports 3-1 in the opening quarterfinal, which EarlyGame's bracket preview had scheduled for November 3. That makes Saturday's match a rematch of Round 1 at this event, which Gen.G won 1-0, according to Esports News UK, the only meeting between the two so far at this tournament.
The Korean sports site recalled before the quarterfinals that Invictus Gaming won the Worlds title in 2018, a result the site tied to two of its current players. The preview also described the Invictus Gaming and Top Esports quarterfinal as an intraleague match within the LPL, China's top domestic league. Esports News UK reported that Invictus Gaming won it in four games.
Beyond Saturday, Field Level Media said the other two semifinal places were still to be decided. The remaining quarterfinals are Dplus KIA against Bilibili Gaming on Thursday and T1 against Karmine Corp on Friday, according to the same outlet, and the grand final is on November 14 at Barclays Center in New York. GosuGamers noted that Gen.G has finished third to fourth in four of its last five Worlds appearances.
A sweep in the quarterfinals leaves Gen.G one series away from a Worlds final.
