ENVY signed Demon1 to its 2026 Valorant Champions Tour roster in the middle of VCT Americas Kickoff, Esports Insider reported on February 6, 2026. He takes the place of inspire, whom the team had moved to the bench a day earlier and who now sits on its reserve roster. The change was made hours before a match ENVY could not afford to lose, and the team lost it.

Sheep Esports reported on February 7 that ENVY went down 0-2 to Evil Geniuses in the lower bracket, which ended its run in the tournament. The signing therefore did not rescue the Kickoff. What it leaves behind is a line-up with one new player, a reserve who is free to look elsewhere, and several weeks before the next competition in which to make the two fit.

What ENVY changed and when

The sequence took two days. On Thursday, February 5, ENVY moved inspire out of its starting five. Esports Insider describes it as a benching: the player stays under contract with the organization but no longer plays its matches. On February 6 the outlet reported the signing of Demon1 to the team's 2026 VCT roster, ahead of the match against Evil Geniuses scheduled for the same day.

Sheep Esports, which covered the move the same morning, wrote that the team had decided to make a change in the middle of the competition and that the reasons for moving inspire to the inactive roster were not made public. Neither outlet gives a fee, a contract length or any other term of the deal.

The two reports differ on one point. Sheep Esports first presented Demon1 as joining ENVY for the rest of the Kickoff, while Esports Insider wrote that he had been signed to the 2026 roster. The player settled the question himself after the match. Speaking to Sheep Esports, he said he was at ENVY as a permanent player and not as a substitute.

That distinction matters because of where he came from. Two weeks earlier he had been playing for another team in the same tournament, on a short arrangement, and had beaten ENVY while doing so.

Where the move leaves inspire

inspire has not been released. Esports Insider reports that ENVY will keep him on its reserve roster until he finds a new team, and that the player said on X the organization was letting him explore his options as a restricted free agent. He added, according to the same report, that he would be streaming daily in the meantime.

ENVY's owner, Mike Rufail, spoke about the decision on X. Esports Insider reports that he called inspire a special player and said the change was not made because he does not belong at the top level of the game. "We know he will fit perfectly with another team," Rufail wrote.

Worth knowing

A benched player is still an ENVY player

inspire was moved to the reserve roster, not let go. According to Esports Insider, ENVY keeps him there until he finds a new team and allows him to look at other options in the meantime. No loan and no release have been announced.

inspire was not a recent arrival. Esports Insider recalls that he was part of the original RANKERS roster, the group ENVY signed when the organization came back to competitive Valorant after three years away. With that roster ENVY won Ascension 2025, the tournament that sends its winner up into the VCT, the top circuit run by Riot Games. The player moved to the reserve list is one of those who earned the place the team now occupies.

The line-up after the change

Four of the five players who started the Kickoff remain, and the coaching staff is unchanged. Esports Insider lists the roster as follows.

The new player brings experience the rest of the roster's recent history does not include. Esports Insider notes that Demon1 won Valorant Champions, the world championship of the game, in 2023 with Evil Geniuses, in his first year at the top level. The same outlet wrote in January that he had since moved between several organizations without a long-term place, and that he had said in December 2025 he would consider retiring from competition if he did not find a permanent spot for 2026.

For ENVY, the trade is one of continuity against experience. The team gives up a player who had been with the group since its return to the game, and takes one who has already won the title every VCT team is chasing. In the Sheep Esports interview, Demon1 said he is comfortable playing controller, the role in charge of blocking sight lines with smoke, and that he has played it before.

How ENVY came to its last match

The change makes more sense once the format is clear. Riot Games introduced a triple-elimination bracket for the 2026 Kickoff events, as Esports Insider and Sheep Esports both explained in January. In such a bracket a team is only out after its third defeat. Sheep Esports adds that most matches are played as a best-of-three, meaning the first team to win two maps takes the series, and that only the final of each bracket is a best-of-five.

VCT Americas has twelve teams this season, according to Sheep Esports: ten partner teams and two that came up through Ascension, G2 Esports and ENVY. ENVY took the place previously held by 2GAME Esports.

ENVY opened the Kickoff by beating Evil Geniuses 2-1, Esports Insider reports. It then lost to MIBR and to Cloud9, which dropped it into the lower bracket, one defeat from going home. Sheep Esports counted two wins and two losses for the team before the lower-bracket match, and calculated that it needed five wins in a row to keep its chance of qualifying for Masters Santiago.

That was the position in which the roster change was made: a newly promoted team, on its last life, with a place at Masters Santiago still mathematically within reach.

Demon1 had just beaten ENVY with Cloud9

The player ENVY signed had been on the other side of one of those two defeats. Cloud9 announced on January 22 that it had signed Demon1 as a substitute, Esports Insider reported the following day, to cover for its player OXY, who was away from the team. The outlet gave no length for that arrangement.

Cloud9 had by then lost to NRG and fallen into the middle bracket. With Demon1 it played two series there, against LEVIATÁN and against ENVY, and won both, according to Esports Insider. Against ENVY he finished with 72 kills, 59 deaths and 13 assists. Sheep Esports wrote that he was named the best player of the match in both series.

So ENVY recruited the stand-in who had just helped send it to the lower bracket. Esports Insider's account contains no transfer between the two clubs: his time with Cloud9 was a substitute spell, and the ENVY deal is described as a signing.

A first match lost after four hours together

The debut came the same day as the news. ENVY met Evil Geniuses again on February 6, this time in the lower bracket, and lost 0-2, Sheep Esports reported. Added to the outlet's earlier count, that leaves ENVY with two wins and three losses in its first VCT tournament.

The match was also a meeting between Demon1 and the organization with which he won the world title in 2023. He told Sheep Esports afterward that he had about five days of practice with Cloud9 before his first match there, and four hours with ENVY before this one. It was the first time the five had played Pearl, one of the game's maps, together, he said. He added that the team had fought its way back on that map and that he felt it could have won it.

His new teammates spoke in the same interview. P0PPIN said the team would make a lot of changes for Stage 1, without saying what they would be. Eggsterr said he does not yet feel fully at ease on stage, where VCT matches are played.

What comes next for ENVY

ENVY will not be at Masters Santiago. The tournament in Chile, one of the first two international events of the 2026 season, is scheduled from February 28 to March 15 with twelve teams, according to the season calendar Sheep Esports published in December 2025. The Americas Kickoff itself runs until February 15, and Cloud9 was among the teams competing for one of its three qualification places, Esports Insider wrote in January.

The team's next competition is Stage 1 of VCT Americas, the first of the two league phases of the year. The same calendar, which does not separate the regions, places Stage 1 between March 31 and May 10. On those dates ENVY has more than seven weeks from its elimination to prepare with a line-up that had four hours the first time.

Two matters remain open in what the sources report. The first is inspire's future: he is on the reserve roster, allowed to look at other options, and the reports name no new team for him. The second is the set of changes P0PPIN mentioned, which the team has not detailed. Both belong to the weeks before Stage 1, the period in which ENVY also has to turn a signing made in a hurry into a settled five.
