Two Counter-Strike 2 teams exchanged one player each, and the exchange came with a deadline attached. G2 and Liquid completed a trade on March 13, 2026, HLTV reported the same afternoon: malbsMd leaves G2 for Liquid, and NertZ leaves Liquid for G2. The site does not say whether the moves are permanent transfers or loans, and gives no fee.
The date matters as much as the names. Invitations to the IEM Cologne Major, the first Counter-Strike 2 Major of 2026, are to be confirmed on April 6, according to ESL, the organizer. A Major is a tournament for which Valve, the game's publisher, writes the rulebook and decides how teams are invited. Both teams have a little over three weeks to turn a new five into an eligible one, and for Liquid the swap also changes which part of the world it is counted in.
One player each way
The mechanics are simple. Each team gives up one of its five players and receives one in return. G2 keeps its four others and its coach; so does Liquid. HLTV lists the two line-ups as they stand after the trade.
| Place | G2 | Liquid |
|---|---|---|
| Arrives | NertZ | malbsMd |
| Stays | huNter- | EliGE |
| Stays | MATYS | NAF |
| Stays | HeavyGod | siuhy |
| Stays | SunPayus | ultimate |
| Coach | sAw | flashie |
The announcement came in two steps on the same day. A little after one in the afternoon, HLTV reported that G2 had removed malbsMd from its active roster, without saying where he was going. A swap with Liquid had been mentioned as a rumor on a podcast, and G2 had not confirmed it. The same report already noted that G2 would go to its next tournament to play five matches with a new fifth player. An hour later the site reported that the two teams had completed the trade, which makes the removal and the arrival two halves of one transaction rather than a benching followed by a search.

Why G2 moved on from malbsMd
G2's side of the trade follows two poor results. HLTV writes that the team went out in the group stage of two tournaments in a row, PGL Cluj-Napoca and Season 23 of the ESL Pro League, and that the removal of malbsMd was announced after the second.
The site describes a player whose numbers had declined since a strong first year. malbsMd had what HLTV calls a scintillating start at G2 and was ranked by the site as the twelfth best player in the world for 2024. HLTV links the drop that followed to a change in the team around him: he took on more responsibility after the departure of NiKo, and struggled to find his form once NiKo and m0NESY had both left G2.
In return G2 gets a player its staff already knows. NertZ played under the G2 coach sAw at ENCE, and alongside SunPayus there, HLTV notes. Three of the six people in G2's line-up, coach included, have therefore already worked together elsewhere. NertZ was HLTV's Rookie of the Year and its thirteenth best player of 2023.
What Liquid gains: a change of region
For Liquid the trade is about more than one position. HLTV writes that the swap makes Liquid an American team again, and that this puts it back in a qualifying spot in the Americas standings.
The explanation lies in how Valve, the publisher of Counter-Strike 2, hands out places at a Major. The 32 invitations for Cologne are based on the Valve Regional Standings, ESL said when it announced the tournament in August 2025. Those standings rank teams inside three regions: Europe, the Americas and Asia. Each region has its own number of places.

Teams play third-party tournaments through the year, and the model ranks them on three things: the prize money a team has earned, the prize money and the number of beaten teams of each opponent it has defeated, and head-to-head results. The stated aim is a ranking that is accurate, hard to game and transparent. The standings are updated periodically, and the release that counts for Cologne is the one of April 6.
A team's region is the one most of its players come from
Valve's Major rulebook assigns a roster to the region represented by the majority of its players. Changing one player out of five can therefore move a whole team from one regional ranking to another.
Before the trade, Liquid's five were EliGE, from the United States, NAF, from Canada, the two Polish players siuhy and ultimate, and NertZ, who is Israeli. Two of the five came from the Americas. With malbsMd, who is Guatemalan, in place of NertZ, the count becomes three of five.
HLTV gives the measure of the difference. As a team counted in Europe, Liquid sat outside the top seventeen of that region with the cut-off approaching. Counted in the Americas, it holds a qualifying position. The site adds a caution: Liquid's presence at the Major is still far from secured.
The players by the numbers
HLTV gives a rating for each of the two players in its reports, and the trade can be read through those figures. Both players arrive with a rating lower than the one that made their reputation.
| Player | Period or team | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| malbsMd | 2024 | 1.13 |
| malbsMd | Since the start of 2025 | 1.05 |
| malbsMd | 2026 | 1.02 |
| malbsMd | 2026, against top-ten teams | 0.94 |
| NertZ | At ENCE | 1.13 |
| NertZ | At HEROIC | 1.12 |
| NertZ | At Liquid | 1.05 |
Ratings as published by HLTV on March 13, 2026.
The two curves look alike. malbsMd's 2024, at 1.13, shows the same figure NertZ posted over his time at ENCE, and each has since settled around 1.05 with his most recent team. HLTV writes that NertZ underperformed at Liquid when set against his breakout year of 2023 and against his 2024 season. Each club is, in effect, exchanging a player below his best level for another in the same situation. What differs is the setting each one finds: a coach and a teammate he already knows for NertZ, and for malbsMd a line-up in which he joins the two North American players, EliGE and NAF.

Neither team can simply wait for the invitations. HLTV reports that both must play five matches with their new player to be eligible before the cut-off. The calendar published by ESL on March 12 sets out what follows.
- April 6Major invitations are confirmed, based on that day's release of the Valve Regional Standings.
- April 13Deadline for invited teams to confirm their name, logo and substitute.
- April 19Deadline for teams to complete the tournament item submission, under Valve's guidelines.
ESL notes that the tournament starts less than two months after those submissions are finalized, which leaves little room for a late change of plan. The Major itself runs from June 2 to 21, 2026, with 32 teams and a prize pool of US$1.25 million, according to ESL's announcement. It is played in four parts: three successive stages, then playoffs for the last eight teams. Valve's rulebook splits the 32 invitations between the three stages, sixteen to the first and eight each to the second and third. The playoffs are played at the LANXESS arena in Cologne from June 18, with the grand final on June 21. It is the first Major in the city in a decade.
G2 has chosen its tournaments accordingly. HLTV reports that the team will first attend a Masters tournament that carries its sponsor's name, where it plans to play five matches with its new fifth player, and then Stake Ranked Episode 1.
Liquid's schedule is heavier. At the time of the trade it was in the middle of Roman Imperium Cup VI, which it was playing with jL as a stand-in, a temporary replacement who is not part of the roster. HLTV lists three more events on its program: BLAST Rotterdam, DraculaN and the WINAMAX Counter-Strike 2 Trophy.

Several points are not settled by what the two teams and HLTV have published. The first is the nature of the deal. A trade can be made of two permanent transfers, of two loans, or of one of each, and the report does not say which applies here. No amount is given for either player.
The second is the Major. For G2, tenth in the world, the question is one of form after two early exits. For Liquid it is one of arithmetic: the team has changed region with a little over three weeks to go, and its place depends on where it stands in the Americas ranking on April 6 and on having played the required matches with malbsMd by then.
The third is the registration itself. Valve's rulebook requires that the roster a team registers for the Major match the roster that was invited, with one substitute allowed, and only if that substitute would not change the team's region. A team invited as an Americas roster cannot change that through its substitute. The same rulebook lets a team bring its substitute into the line-up only once during the event, and a team that then goes back to its original five cannot substitute again.
The first answers come on the server. G2 has its five matches planned at that Masters tournament, Liquid has three tournaments on its program after the one it is finishing with a stand-in, and the April 6 release will show where each of them stands.
