How the Swiss stage sorts 16 teams
PGL Masters Bucharest is a studio event in Romania with a US$1.25 million prize pool, played from October 24 to October 31, according to the tournament guide published by Insider Gaming on October 22. The group stage is a Swiss bracket: a format in which each round pairs teams that share the same win-loss record. A team that collects three wins reaches the playoffs, and a team that collects three losses is out. Every group-stage match is a best-of-three, meaning the first side to win two maps takes the series.
That makes Round 2 a sorting round. The eight teams that won on Saturday met each other, and the eight that lost did the same, which is why the four unbeaten teams on Sunday night are all one series from a playoff place. The playoffs are an eight-team single-elimination bracket, according to the same guide.
The same guide gave the first-place prize as US$450,000, of which US$225,000 is the club share, and said US$625,000 of the total pool is club share. A club share is money paid to the organization rather than to individual players. It also said Swiss placement sets the seeding of the playoff bracket.

The opening day produced the results that decided Sunday's pairings. According to HLTV's reports, BetBoom beat Team Spirit, Team Liquid beat MOUZ, Nemiga swept Legacy, The MongolZ beat Aurora and Natus Vincere beat G2 Esports with what HLTV's headline called a narrow win. FUT Esports beat TYLOO 2-0, Team Vitality beat 9z, and FURIA beat DENDELE. HLTV's headline over the BetBoom result said the upsets were continuing, and Spirit and MOUZ were ranked first and fourth in HLTV's world ranking of October 19.
Nemiga's win over Legacy was tight on the first map: Nemiga took Ancient 25-23 in overtime and Dust2 13-8, as HLTV's report on Legacy's Sunday win recounted. That is why Legacy started Sunday in the 0-1 pool, and why a 2-0 win over DENDELE was enough to bring them level.

The unbeaten four
FUT Esports beat Liquid 2-0, winning Cache 13-5 and Dust2 13-9, HLTV reported. Liquid won both pistol rounds, the opening rounds of each half, on Cache but could not build on them, and FUT won six straight rounds after the first pistol. The report named dem0n as the best player on the server, with a 43-19 kill-death record and a 1.98 rating over the series. It was FUT's second straight sweep, after a 2-0 win over TYLOO on Saturday, and the second Bucharest win for SunPayus, who made his FUT debut against TYLOO.
Team Vitality beat The MongolZ 2-0, with Inferno finishing 13-6 and Cache 13-3. HLTV reported that The MongolZ led Inferno 5-0 after a 1v2 clutch by 910, then lost ten rounds in a row as ZywOo led the comeback. ZywOo finished the series 35-16 with a 1.98 rating, and flameZ went 34-17 with 1.95. On Cache, Vitality trailed 0-2 and then won thirteen of the next fourteen rounds, with flameZ leading the attack.

Across the eight series, a handful of players stood out in the stat lines HLTV published. Besides dem0n, ZywOo and flameZ, MOUZ's Spinx finished 27-16 with a 1.53 rating against 9z, narrowly ahead on rating of his teammate torzsi, who went 30-12 with 1.51. Aurora's Jimpphat finished 42-28 with a 1.42 rating against G2.
The four at 0-2
At the other end of the standings, Sunday ended with four teams needing to win three series in a row to reach the playoffs, which in this format means winning every remaining match.
TYLOO lost 2-0 to Spirit, 13-5 on Mirage and 13-3 on Anubis. TYLOO have not reached double digits on any of their four maps at the event: 9 and 6 against FUT, 5 and 3 against Spirit. 9z lost 2-0 to MOUZ, 13-5 on Dust2 and 13-3 on Nuke, after opening with a loss to Vitality. HLTV reported that Dust2 was tied 4-4 before MOUZ led 7-5 at the half and won all six rounds after the break, and that MOUZ led Nuke 10-2 at the half, with torzsi taking 18 kills at a 2.09 rating on that map. 9z are still winless on maps at the event.

HLTV reported that G2 led Inferno 12-9 before woxic took all five kills in a 2v5 round to start Aurora's comeback, and that kyxsan later got an ace in overtime. Aurora had lost both pistol rounds on Cache and still won the map. G2 beat Aurora twice in August, according to the report, and have lost six of seven matches since losing the FPG 3 final in September.
DENDELE lost to Legacy 2-0 in what HLTV called a domestic derby, 13-9 on Cache and 19-17 in double overtime on Mirage. Legacy led Cache 12-4 before n1ssim closed the map with a 1v3, and DENDELE led Mirage 7-5 at the half and reached map point at 12-9 before the map went to overtime and double overtime. try finished with a 59-33 kill-death record and a 1.57 rating. Legacy had started the weekend at 0-1 after a 23-25 loss on Ancient and an 8-13 loss on Dust2 against Nemiga, and they won all four pistol rounds against DENDELE.
What the results mean for the Major
The event matters beyond its trophy because of the timing. A North American Counter-Strike news site said in July, when PGL announced the invitations, that Bucharest is the last significant LAN before the November 2 cut-off for the standings that feed invitations to the PGL Major Singapore.
FUT Esports and Natus Vincere show how closely teams are tracking it.
Matches played now can settle a Major roster
HLTV reported that SunPayus needs five more matches with FUT before the November 2 standings cut-off to replace cmtry on the team's Major invitation roster. The same report said cmtry now plays for Astralis, so the number of matches played in Bucharest matters to both teams.
For NAVI the pressure is about attendance. HLTV described the team as arriving in Romania with its Major invitation still in doubt, and reported that the team had also entered a separate LAN tournament, HyperX Retake Season 13, to protect its record of attending every Major. HLTV's report cited a simulation giving NAVI a 99.9% chance of an invitation, a figure that assumes they attend Retake and add wins there.

The 2-0 pool holds FUT Esports, Team Vitality, BetBoom and Natus Vincere. The 1-1 pool holds Liquid, Spirit, The MongolZ, Nemiga, Aurora, MOUZ, FURIA and Legacy, and the 0-2 pool holds G2 Esports, 9z, TYLOO and DENDELE. That mirrors the day 3 schedule HLTV published on Sunday evening, which listed two series for the 2-0 pool, four for the 1-1 pool and two for the 0-2 pool.
The arithmetic is simple. A team at 2-0 needs one more win and can afford to lose twice before it wins. A team at 1-1 needs two wins from its next three matches. A team at 0-2 cannot afford another defeat, and because the four 0-2 teams are paired off against each other on Monday, two of them will be eliminated that day.
Monday's Round 3 schedule
Round 3 again pairs teams with matching records. In the 2-0 pool, Vitality face FUT and BetBoom face Natus Vincere, with each winner reaching the playoffs. In the 1-1 pool, Nemiga face Aurora, The MongolZ face MOUZ, Spirit face FURIA and Liquid face Legacy. In the 0-2 pool, 9z face TYLOO and G2 face DENDELE in elimination matches.
HLTV's day 3 schedule led with one pairing: Spirit, who opened the event with a loss to BetBoom, meet FURIA, who dropped to 1-1 against NAVI. That schedule listed Vitality at second in its world ranking, FURIA third and Aurora fifth, as of October 19, with BetBoom ninth and FUT tenth.
The group stage runs through October 28, and the playoffs follow from October 29 to October 31, according to Insider Gaming's tournament guide.
