PGL Astana 2026 drew more than 1.16 million peak viewers, the largest audience PGL has recorded for a Counter-Strike tournament that was not a Major. Esports Charts published the figure on Monday, May 18, the day after Team Spirit beat Team Falcons 3-0 in the grand final in Kazakhstan.

Peak viewers is the highest number of people watching at the same moment. The audience analytics firm also counted an average of 295.4K viewers across the airtime and more than 23.4 million hours watched, the total time all viewers spent on the broadcasts. Its headline credited the duel between donk of Team Spirit and m0NESY of Team Falcons for much of the interest, and the language figures show where that interest came from.

Esports Charts, release of May 18, 2026. Peak and hours watched are given as more than 1.16 million and more than 23.4 million.

Nine days in Astana

PGL ran the tournament from May 9 to 17, according to its event page. Sixteen teams played a Swiss-system group stage from May 9 to 13, a format in which teams with the same record meet each other: three wins sent a team through, three defeats sent it home, and every match was a best-of-three, a series won by the first team to take two maps. The top eight moved to a single-elimination bracket at Barys Arena, played from May 15 to 17, with a best-of-five grand final.

The organizer lists a total of US$1.6 million, split into US$800,000 in prize money for players and US$800,000 in club rewards, the share paid to the organizations. Of the player prize money, US$256,000 goes to the winner, US$120,000 to the runner-up, US$96,000 to third place and US$56,000 to fourth. Third place was settled by a decider match played on the last day, according to Esports Charts.

The group stage cleared the field quickly. 9z Team won their first three matches and were among the first teams into the playoffs, beating PARIVISION, Team Falcons and MOUZ, Esports Charts reported. The team magic came through the elimination matches against HEROIC and Gentle Mates. The MongolZ and PARIVISION went out. The quarterfinals paired 9z Team with magic, Team Falcons with FURIA, MOUZ with Aurora Gaming, and G2 Esports with Team Spirit.

The bracket set up the audience. Team Falcons beat FURIA in the quarterfinals and magic in the semifinals. Team Spirit beat G2 Esports and then MOUZ. In the final Spirit won 3-0, their first trophy of 2026, and HLTV named donk the most valuable player of the event, Esports Charts noted. On the losing side, the firm pointed out that karrigan, in his first official event as in-game leader of Team Falcons, the player who calls the team's tactics during rounds, finished with a 0.73 rating, his lowest in two years.

The event also shared its days with another one. Esports Charts' group-stage release of May 14 pointed out that PGL Astana ran at the same time as IEM Atlanta 2026, another Counter-Strike tournament on the same days.

Growth on every measure

Esports Charts measured each figure against PGL Astana 2025, the previous edition. The comparison holds across the whole event and across the group stage, which the firm had already counted on its own.

In the group stage, the most watched match was Team Spirit against FURIA, at 685,400 peak viewers. Two series of Team Falcons completed the top three of that stage. Over the whole event, the grand final was the most watched match, and two FURIA matches still ranked among the top three.

Where the record sits

The 1.16 million peak puts PGL Astana 2026 just below the organizer's biggest events. Esports Charts wrote that PGL has recorded more viewers only at three of its Majors, the top tournaments of the Counter-Strike calendar: Stockholm in 2021, Antwerp in 2022 and Copenhagen in 2024. The firm also called it the most popular esports tournament in Kazakhstan's history.

Among the year's Counter-Strike events, it ranks second so far. IEM Kraków 2026, played in February, stays ahead with 1.38 million peak viewers, the figure Esports Charts gave in its release of February 23. That same release covered PGL's first event of the year, PGL Cluj-Napoca 2026, whose grand final peaked at 881,600 viewers, 63.5 percent more than its 2025 edition.

Esports Charts, releases of February 23 and May 18, 2026. Three events named by the firm, not a full ranking of the year.

The chart shows how far PGL has moved within one spring. In February, Esports Charts ranked Cluj-Napoca as the second most popular PGL tournament outside a Major, behind PGL Astana 2025. Three months later, the 2026 edition in Astana has taken that first place for itself.

The two PGL events of the spring grew at different speeds. Cluj-Napoca, played with teams selected from Valve's January global rankings and won 3-0 by Team Vitality over PARIVISION on February 22, raised its average viewers by 55.2 percent and its hours watched by 60.4 percent against its 2025 edition, by the firm's count. Esports Charts then placed it sixth among all PGL events. Astana's gains were smaller in percentage, 13.5 percent on the average and 7 percent on hours watched, but they came on top of what was already the organizer's largest audience outside a Major, and they lift the event to fourth in PGL's history, behind the three Majors.

The Russian-language audience

The largest single language audience came from Russian-speaking viewers. Russian streams peaked at 548.2K, the second-highest Russian-language peak in the history of Counter-Strike according to the firm, behind only the PGL Major Stockholm in 2021.

The final brought that audience its main match: Team Spirit, the team of donk, against Team Falcons, the team of m0NESY. Esports Charts framed the event around the head-to-head between the two players, and donk came out of it with the trophy and the most valuable player award.

The group stage had already shown the trend. In its May 14 release, the firm said growth came in part from a notable rise in Russian-language and Portuguese-language coverage.

A Portuguese audience that followed FURIA

The Portuguese-language figures moved with one team. FURIA, the Brazilian organization, played in two of the event's three most watched matches, and Brazilian viewers came with them. Esports Charts credited Gaules, the Brazilian streamer, with a large share of the Portuguese audience. During the group stage, the firm said, he widened his reach by also broadcasting on Kick, a practice known as multistreaming, in which one stream goes out on several platforms at once.

Then the bracket turned. FURIA lost their first playoff match, the quarterfinal against Team Falcons, and the Portuguese peak dropped from 215K to 14K, a fall of more than 93 percent. It climbed back to 40K for the grand final, a match with no Brazilian team in it.

Who holds the rights in Brazil

The Brazilian market also has a rights holder of its own for PGL's events this year. In January, BetBoom, a betting company, announced a three-year deal to broadcast PGL's international and domestic Counter-Strike 2 competitions to the Brazilian market, The Esports Advocate reported on January 14. The deal covers at least five tournaments a year. For 2026 the outlet listed PGL Cluj-Napoca, PGL Bucharest, the PGL Singapore Major, PGL Astana and PGL Masters Bucharest.

BetBoom said it holds exclusive rights to broadcast images of the tournaments in the country. The financial terms were not disclosed. Andrei Hurmuzache, head of media partnerships at PGL, gave the organizer's reason in one line: "Brazil is one of the most passionate CS2 communities in the world."

What comes next on the calendar

The circuit moves straight on. Esports Charts pointed to CS Asia Championships 2026, played in Shanghai from May 20 to 24, as the next Counter-Strike event. Its figures for that one will carry a known boundary: in an earlier release, on March 5, the firm stated that it cannot track viewership on Chinese livestreaming sites. In June comes the IEM Cologne Major, played from June 2 to 21, with 32 teams invited through Valve's regional standings and a prize pool of US$1.25 million.

PGL's own biggest date of the year comes later. The PGL Major Singapore 2026, one of the events listed in the Brazilian deal, is set for November 24 to December 13, with 32 teams and US$1.25 million, according to the calendar the organizer set in April. PGL Cluj-Napoca, for its part, returns in February 2027: the city's mayor announced on the day of this year's final that it will host PGL events in 2027, 2028 and 2029.
