PGL Masters Bucharest opened on Saturday, October 24, with three of its first four series won by the lower-ranked team, according to reports from HLTV and a second news report. The MongolZ beat the defending champions Aurora, Liquid beat MOUZ, and BetBoom beat Spirit, each by 2-1. FUT, which the second news report called the only higher seed to win among the first four series, beat TYLOO 2-0.
The tournament is a US$1.25 million Counter-Strike 2 event at PGL Studios in Bucharest, Romania, and it runs until October 31. Sixteen teams are playing a Swiss stage in which every series is a best-of-three. A Swiss stage is a group format in which teams are paired by their current record.
HLTV and a second news report, both published October 24, 2026. The prize pool figure is the one reported by HLTV and Dot Esports.
What PGL Masters Bucharest is
PGL Masters Bucharest returns in 2026, a year after Aurora won the 2025 edition. According to Dot Esports, this edition runs from October 24 to 31 and brings sixteen teams from Europe, the Americas and Asia. Twelve received invitations through the Valve Regional Standings, the ranking that Valve publishes and uses to rate teams. Four came through qualifiers: Nemiga Gaming from Europe, Team Liquid from North America, DENDELE from South America and TYLOO from Asia.
The Swiss stage takes place from October 24 to 28. A team needs three wins to move on to the playoffs, and eight of the sixteen teams advance to a single-elimination bracket on October 29 to 31. Quarterfinals, semifinals and the third-place match are best-of-three, and the grand final on October 31 is a best-of-five.
Aurora Gaming arrived as the defending champion. Dot Esports noted that Aurora won the 2025 edition by beating Legacy 3-2 in the grand final, and that the team returned with a rebuilt roster for the 2026 edition.

HLTV's preview of the opening round, published on October 16, said that Nemiga and Natus Vincere were seeking a berth at the Singapore Major through this event.
The opening round
HLTV's preview listed eight Round 1 matchups: Aurora against The MongolZ, FUT against TYLOO, MOUZ against Liquid, Spirit against BetBoom, Legacy against Nemiga, Vitality against 9z, FURIA against DENDELE, and G2 against Natus Vincere. Four of them had been completed in time for the reports used here.

The MongolZ stun Aurora
The MongolZ lost the first map and then won two others by wide margins. Aurora took Inferno 16-12 in overtime, the extra rounds played when a map is tied at the end of regulation. The MongolZ then won Nuke 13-2 and Dust2 13-9, according to HLTV.
The player the report singled out was the Mongolian team's 910, who finished the series with 53 kills and 33 deaths and a rating of 1.23. Techno recorded a 1.12 rating. A rating in this context is a single number that summarizes a player's impact, with 1.00 as an average performance. On Aurora's side, HLTV credited Wicadia for a strong Inferno that helped Aurora take that map. Aurora had arrived with a rebuilt roster that includes Jimpphat and kyxsan, according to Dot Esports' event guide.
The result was also a debut of a kind. HLTV noted that The MongolZ were making their tier-one debut with nin9, their newest recruit, who averaged a 1.04 rating across the series. HLTV also reported that the win earned The MongolZ 84 points in the Valve Regional Standings.

The second upset was the closest. The second news report listed MOUZ at No. 4 in HLTV's ranking, and each of the three maps lasted at least 24 rounds.
MOUZ won Ancient 16-13 in overtime. HLTV reported that Keith "NAF" Markovic won a round in which he faced five opponents alone. Liquid then took Inferno 16-12 in overtime, after a 5-0 start that MOUZ erased with eight straight rounds, as HLTV reported. The deciding map was Mirage, which Liquid won 13-11 according to a second news report. NAF had the highest rating in the match, 1.12.
Liquid qualified for Bucharest through the North American closed qualifier, rather than through a ranking invitation. HLTV listed its five players in the series as Keith "NAF" Markovic, Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa, Georgi "Jorko" Mitev, Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski and Johnny "JT" Theodosiou. The win put Liquid in the 1-0 pool, and HLTV listed it against FUT on October 25.
BetBoom beat Spirit, and FUT win cleanly
BetBoom beat Spirit 2-1. Spirit won Anubis 13-10, BetBoom won Ancient 13-3, and BetBoom took Mirage 16-14 in overtime, according to HLTV. HLTV named Aleksandr "zorte" Zagodyrenko player of the match, with a 1.46 rating, 57 kills and 37 deaths, and said the series was decided by a 1v3 clutch from zorte on Mirage. A clutch is a round in which one player is left alone against several opponents and still wins it, and a 1v3 means he faced three.
The other BetBoom players were also positive in HLTV's account. Pavel "S1ren" Ogloblin recorded a 1.16 rating, Daniil "d1Ledez" Kustov a 1.15 and Kirill "Magnojez" Rodnov a 1.11.

HLTV framed Spirit's loss as a continuation of the day's upsets, and the second news report said three of the top five teams in HLTV's ranking had lost their openers.
How narrow the margins were
The round totals show how close the three three-map series were. In The MongolZ against Aurora, the winners took 38 of 65 rounds, or about 58 per cent. In Liquid against MOUZ, Liquid took 42 of 81 rounds, about 52 per cent, which means the team that won the series won barely more than half of the rounds played. In BetBoom against Spirit, BetBoom took 39 of 69, about 57 per cent, even though one of its two map wins was a 13-3 and the other needed overtime.
Across the three series, the winners took 119 of the 215 rounds played, about 55 per cent. A series is decided by maps, not by rounds, so a team can win a best-of-three while winning only a small majority of the rounds, as Liquid did.
The label "upset" also depends on what each loser was. MOUZ were No. 4 in HLTV's ranking, according to the second news report. Spirit were described as the world No. 1 in HLTV's ranking by the second news report. Aurora were the defending champions of this event. Three of the strongest names in the field therefore started in the 0-1 pool, where a second defeat would leave them at 0-2.

That is 26 of the 41 rounds played, about 63 per cent, the widest round share of the four series. Because no third map was needed, it was the only one of the four series decided in two maps. The second news report called FUT the only higher seed to win among the first four series, and HLTV described FUT as the only high seed to win its opening match so far, which makes it the exception on a day of upsets.
FUT also had a new face in the lineup. HLTV's October 16 preview noted that the team was debuting Álvaro "SunPayus" García as its AWPer, the player who uses the game's sniper rifle. TYLOO, the Asian qualifier, now sits in the 0-1 pool.
What the opening round sets up
After the first round, the 1-0 pool holds The MongolZ, Liquid, BetBoom and FUT among the completed series, and the 0-1 pool holds Aurora, MOUZ, Spirit and TYLOO. A team that wins its first two series reaches 2-0 and needs one more win to make the playoffs. A team that loses its first two series reaches 0-2. Eight of the sixteen teams advance to the playoffs, so every record in the 0-1 pool still has to be rebuilt from the start.
The remaining four Round 1 series, Legacy against Nemiga, Vitality against 9z, FURIA against DENDELE, and G2 against Natus Vincere, were scheduled later on Saturday, and their results are not covered here.
Four of the 11 maps played in the completed series needed overtime. The count includes Inferno between The MongolZ and Aurora, Ancient and Inferno between Liquid and MOUZ, and Mirage between BetBoom and Spirit.
A Swiss stage punishes a loss less than a single-elimination bracket does. It still punishes two in a row.
