Team Falcons and FURIA both won their Day 2 series at the Thunderpick World Championship 2026 on October 15, clinching playoff spots at BLAST Studios Malta without needing to play again before the single-elimination bracket begins. The same day's results eliminated Ninjas in Pyjamas and PARIVISION, who both fell to 0-2 in the double-elimination Group Stage.
Falcons beat 9z Team 2-1, while FURIA beat Legacy 2-1 in a series that went the other way on paper: Legacy won the opening map before FURIA took the next two. Aurora Gaming and BetBoom Team both survived elimination matches of their own, setting up a pair of winner-takes-the-spot deciders on October 16 that will decide the final two playoff places, with the losers of both matches heading home without a share of the tournament's playoff prize money.

How Falcons closed out Group A
Falcons, already 2-0 after Wednesday's overtime win over Ninjas in Pyjamas, needed one more win over 9z Team to finish the Group Stage unbeaten. Falcons won the opening map, Nuke, 13-9, before 9z leveled the series by taking Mirage 13-8; Falcons then closed it out 13-9 on Dust II. The win gives Falcons the Group A top seed heading into the playoffs without the team having to play Friday's decider at all, a contrast with the overtime finish the team needed just to beat Ninjas in Pyjamas a day earlier.
The result also keeps alive the individual storyline already attached to Falcons' run in Malta: in-game leader karrigan is chasing a second Thunderpick World Championship title, after winning the event's first edition with FaZe Clan in 2023, while playing for an organization that has not lifted a trophy since the Cologne Major in June.

FURIA's path to a playoff spot was less direct. Legacy won the opening map, Cache, 13-10, putting FURIA in a position where a single more lost map would have sent the defending Thunderpick champions to Friday's decider instead of straight into the playoffs. FURIA responded by winning Inferno 13-5 and Mirage 13-8, closing out the series 2-1 and securing their spot in the single-elimination bracket.
The win keeps alive the rivalry angle between the two sides: Legacy had already beaten FURIA twice this year, including in the Esports World Cup's third-place match in August, making Thursday's result FURIA's first win over Legacy since that defeat. It also means FURIA's playoff spot came through Group B rather than a clean sweep, a tighter path than the one the team's captain, FalleN, has already described as a season with little room to prepare after six events since August.

Two teams are out after one bad day in each group
The Thunderpick World Championship runs a double-elimination Group Stage, which means Wednesday's opening-day losers had one more match to save their tournament. Ninjas in Pyjamas lost that match too, falling 2-0 to Aurora Gaming on Cache and Dust II, and are eliminated after replacing Virtus.pro in the field on short notice ahead of the event. PARIVISION lost 2-1 to BetBoom Team, taking the opening map before BetBoom closed out the next two, and are eliminated as well.
Both results end the Malta run for teams that had reasons to feel they belonged in the playoff conversation. Ninjas in Pyjamas had won two tier-two events since adding Krimbo and adamb to its lineup before the late call-up to Malta, while PARIVISION had taken a map off Legacy in overtime on the tournament's opening day. Neither result was enough to survive the Group Stage's second loss.

Aurora Gaming and BetBoom Team avoided elimination on Day 2, but neither is through yet. Both still have to beat the team they are paired against on October 16 to take the final two playoff places in each group.
What is left to decide on Day 3
Group A's final playoff place now comes down to Aurora Gaming against 9z Team, a rematch of the pair's Day 1 meeting that 9z won 2-0. Group B's comes down to BetBoom Team against Legacy, the only unbeaten team heading into Thursday to lose a series all week. Both deciders are win-or-go-home, and both losers finish the tournament without reaching the playoff bracket.
For Legacy specifically, Friday's match is a sharper test than the one the team faced a day earlier. Legacy had opened the tournament with an overtime win over PARIVISION and had taken a map off FURIA before dropping the Group B winners' match, leaving the roster's playoff hopes dependent on beating a BetBoom side that has now needed a deciding map in each of its last two series.
Aurora and BetBoom both carry recent history into Friday's match against each other's groups rather than against one another, but each has a case for why it should be the team to survive. Aurora reached the IEM Cologne Major 2026 semifinals in June, beating BetBoom 2-0 in the quarterfinal along the way on the strength of a dominant defensive showing on Anubis, before going on to finish runner-up at StarSeries Fall in September with wins over NAVI and NRG ahead of a 1-3 loss to Vitality in that event's grand final. 9z Team, by contrast, reached the same Major's playoffs in its own right, beating The MongolZ 2-0 in June to become the first South American roster without a Brazilian core to reach a Major's top eight. Both teams enter Friday with recent top-flight results to point to, which is part of why neither Group A decider nor Group B's has been treated as a formality.

Falcons and FURIA's results mean both teams enter the playoffs without having played a Group Stage decider, a scheduling advantage the tournament's format rewards for finishing a group unbeaten or recovering quickly from a single loss. The six teams who have already secured a result this week head into the weekend split between two guaranteed playoff spots and four teams still fighting for the remaining two places, a cleaner picture than the four-way tie the bracket held after Wednesday's sweeps.
The playoff field itself stays small by design: only the top two finishers from each of the two groups advance, meaning Friday's winners join Falcons and FURIA as the tournament's last four teams rather than entering a larger bracket. The prize pool at stake remains unchanged from the tournament's announced structure: $1 million total, split evenly between players and organizations at every placement from the champion's share down to the teams finishing seventh and eighth. Falcons and FURIA's clinched spots guarantee both organizations at least the payout tied to a semifinal finish, while Friday's four remaining teams are playing both for a place in the final four and for the floor of their own eventual payout.
A tournament that rewards finishing clean
Thursday's results underline why both Falcons and FURIA treated their Group Stage openers as more than a formality. The Thunderpick World Championship is now in its fourth year, and every previous edition has had a different champion: FaZe Clan in 2023, The MongolZ in 2024 and FURIA last year, with the prize for first place growing each time the event has returned. BLAST Studios Malta, the tournament's home since it moved to Attard, is hosting the full five days of play, broadcast through Thunderpick's own channels rather than a third-party rights holder.
That structure means a team's Group Stage finish carries weight beyond simply reaching the final four. Falcons and FURIA now know they will play their semifinal having rested since Thursday, while Friday's two winners will arrive having played, at minimum, three series in three days. For a tournament that has crowned three different champions in three years, finishing the Group Stage without needing Friday's deciders is as much a competitive advantage as a result in its own right.
What comes next
October 16 carries both Group Stage deciders: Aurora Gaming against 9z Team for the last Group A spot, and BetBoom Team against Legacy for the last Group B spot. The resulting four-team field, including Falcons and FURIA, then plays out October 17-18 in a single-elimination format built around best-of-three semifinals, a third-place match and a best-of-five grand final at BLAST Studios Malta.
