Every series on the opening day of the Thunderpick World Championship 2026 ended 2-0. Team Falcons needed overtime to get there against Ninjas in Pyjamas, but all four Group Stage matches at BLAST Studios Malta on October 14 finished in straight maps, a clean sweep that left half the eight-team field already facing an elimination match on Day 2.

The $1 million event, now in its fourth year, brought together FURIA as the defending champions, Falcons as the reigning Cologne Major winners, and six other teams split across two double-elimination groups. By the end of the first night, every winner had kept their bracket life intact without dropping a single map.

Falcons needed every round to get past NIP

Team Falcons, grouped with Ninjas in Pyjamas, 9z Team and Aurora Gaming in Group A, had the closest call of the day. Against Ninjas in Pyjamas, Falcons led 8-4 at the midpoint of the opening map before NIP clawed the score level, pushing the map to overtime, which Falcons eventually closed out 16-13. The second map was far more one-sided: Falcons took Dust II 13-6 to finish the series 2-0 and secure a playoff berth.

Falcons arrived in Malta as the tournament's favorites largely by elimination: Team Vitality, MOUZ and Team Spirit are not in the field this year, leaving Falcons as the highest-ranked team present. That status sits awkwardly next to their recent results — Falcons have not lifted a trophy since beating FURIA 3-0 in the Cologne Major final in June, and their form since then has been a string of mid-table finishes, including a 5th-8th placement at ESL Pro League Season 24, where Spirit eliminated them in the quarter-finals. Rifler m0NESY was Falcons' standout at that event with a 1.28 rating; in-game leader karrigan finished with the third-lowest rating among all 80 players who competed, at 0.69.

There is an individual storyline running alongside the team's, too. karrigan won the Thunderpick World Championship's first edition in 2023 with FaZe Clan; a second title in Malta with Falcons would make him the only player to have won the event twice. Asked about the stakes of the tournament, karrigan told Hotspawn the field wants this win badly, since a strong result here carries weight toward the next Major's invitations as well.

Worth knowing

A playoff spot is not a free pass

Winning the opening match at the Thunderpick World Championship secures a playoff berth, but it does not set final seeding. Group placement is still decided by the rest of each team's results in the double-elimination stage.

FURIA opened its title defense, but its season has been rough

FURIA, the defending champions after beating NAVI in last year's final, beat BetBoom 2-0 in Group B, taking Ancient 13-10 and Mirage 13-9 after trailing 4-8 on both maps before turning the series around. KSCERATO led the match with a 1.72 rating, while captain FalleN finished at 0.74.

The win came in the middle of what FalleN has described as an overloaded stretch of the calendar. FURIA have played six events since August — the Esports World Cup, BLAST Open Fall, FISSURE Playground #3, StarSeries Fall, ESL Pro League Season 24 and now Malta — with PGL Masters Bucharest following on October 24 and the Singapore Major in December still ahead. FalleN said the schedule has left little room to practice and called the team's recent run of results a little bit rough; FURIA reached the Cologne Major final in June and the IEM Kraków final in February but have not won a trophy since BLAST Rivals Fall in November 2025, with their last five events all finishing between third and eighth place.

FURIA's next match raises the stakes further. The winner of Group B goes to Thursday's winners' match between FURIA and Legacy at 18:00 CEST, with that winner advancing straight to Saturday's semi-finals and the loser getting one more chance in Friday's decider. Legacy have already beaten FURIA twice this season, including in the third-place match at the Esports World Cup, giving Thursday's match a rivalry edge on top of its bracket stakes.

The other half of the bracket swept just as clean

Group A's second match saw 9z Team beat Aurora Gaming 2-0, taking Inferno 13-11 before closing out Nuke 13-1 — the most lopsided map score of the day. The result is an early setback for Aurora, who had been pointed to as the field's form team on paper after a second-place finish at StarSeries Fall and a third-place run at ESL Pro League Season 24. Aurora now has to beat Ninjas in Pyjamas on Day 2 to avoid an early group-stage exit.

In Group B, Legacy beat PARIVISION 2-0, needing overtime of their own to take Mirage 16-14 after winning Dust II 13-11. Legacy's roster includes arT, who had missed ESL Pro League Season 24 and has since returned to the lineup. The team already has a result to point to this season beyond Wednesday's win: Legacy knocked Falcons out of the Esports World Cup in August, and won FISSURE Playground #3 outright.

Ninjas in Pyjamas' presence in Group A is itself a late change to the field. The organization replaced Virtus.pro in the lineup after the original roster became unavailable; NIP have won two tier-two events in a row since adding Krimbo and adamb to their lineup, giving Wednesday's close loss to Falcons a different context than a team simply overmatched by the tournament's favorite.

What a clean sweep day means for the rest of the bracket

The Thunderpick World Championship runs a double-elimination Group Stage, so a Day 1 loss is not an immediate elimination for Ninjas in Pyjamas, Aurora Gaming, BetBoom or PARIVISION. All four now move into Day 2 matches they have to win to stay alive in their group, while Falcons, 9z Team, FURIA and Legacy can afford a loss in their next match without being eliminated outright.

For Aurora Gaming in particular, the loss to 9z Team is a setback for a team that had been considered one of the tournament's stronger sides on the announced eight-team list. Aurora now plays Ninjas in Pyjamas on Day 2, a match that one of the two teams has to win just to avoid an early exit from Group A.

Why this event matters beyond its own bracket

The Thunderpick World Championship's placement on the calendar gives it weight beyond its own prize pool. The tournament runs in the weeks before the November 2 cutoff for Valve Regional Standings points that count toward Singapore Major invitations, making every match in Malta relevant to teams still building a case for a direct invite to Counter-Strike's next Valve-backed Major.

The $1 million prize pool is split evenly between players and organizations at every placement, from $500,000 total for first place down to $20,000 for finishing seventh or eighth. The tournament has had a different champion each of its first three years: FaZe Clan took the inaugural edition in 2023 for a $250,000 first prize, The MongolZ won in 2024, and FURIA won last year's edition, each champion taking home a larger purse than the one before it as the event has grown.

Now in its fourth year, the Thunderpick World Championship has built its identity as one of the larger independent Counter-Strike events held outside the Valve-backed Major and ESL/BLAST partner circuits. BLAST Studios Malta, the tournament's home in Attard since the event moved there, is hosting all five days of play, with every match broadcast live across Thunderpick's own Twitch, Kick and YouTube channels rather than through a third-party rights holder. That independent structure is part of why the field looks the way it does this year: with none of Vitality, MOUZ or Spirit attending, the eight teams in Malta are competing for a title that, in a different week, several higher-ranked teams might otherwise have contested.

What comes next

The Group Stage continues through October 16, with the top two teams from each group advancing to a single-elimination playoff bracket on October 17-18, built around best-of-three semi-finals, a third-place match and a best-of-five grand final. Day 2 pairs the four Day 1 winners against each other for group-leader positioning — including the FURIA-Legacy winners' match at 18:00 CEST — while the four losers, Ninjas in Pyjamas, Aurora Gaming, BetBoom and PARIVISION, play elimination-stakes matches to stay in contention for one of the bracket's four playoff spots.
