The name that won a Counter-Strike Major in 2016 is back on a server. Luminosity confirmed on July 1, 2026, that it had signed five players for Counter-Strike 2, HLTV reported the same day: four from Monte, a team that had just played the Cologne Major, and the Brazilian captain lux.
It is the organization's first roster in the game since September 2019, when it let its last Brazilian lineup go. It also follows a change of hands. Steve Maida, who founded Luminosity and sold it in 2019, bought the brand back in January 2026.
The club that returns is not the one that left. HLTV describes Luminosity as a Canadian club that will now field a European group, led by a Brazilian.
HLTV, July 1, 2026, and its report of September 13, 2019, on the release of the previous roster.
Five signings and a coach who stays
The five names come from five countries. Three of them were at the end of their contracts with Monte, one had to be bought out, and the fifth had just been released from the bench of Legacy.
| Handle | Country | Age | How he arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| lux | Brazil | 24 | Former Legacy captain |
| Rainwaker | Bulgaria | 25 | Bought out of his Monte contract |
| Bymas | Lithuania | 22 | Free transfer, Monte deal expired |
| afro | France | 27 | Free transfer, Monte deal expired |
| AZUWU | United Kingdom | 22 | Free transfer, Monte deal expired |

Behind them stands kakafu, the Austrian coach who was listed with Monte's roster during the Major. HLTV writes that he remains with the team and that no announcement has been made about a permanent coach.
Maida's statement, published on Luminosity's website and relayed by HLTV, ties the choice of players to their last tournament. "We believe fully in this team and their success at Cologne proved we bet right," it reads. He also wrote that buying Luminosity back had been his goal since he retired in 2021, and that the chance to sign the core of the team as free agents had presented itself.

The four Monte players did not arrive on the same terms, and the difference decides who was paid.
A free transfer costs the new club no fee
A player whose contract has ended can sign anywhere, and his former team receives nothing. A player still under contract leaves only if the new club pays a buyout, the fee that ends the deal early.
Bymas, afro and AZUWU are in the first case. Their deals with Monte expired and they join on free transfers, HLTV reports. Rainwaker, the most recent arrival at Monte, is in the second: Luminosity had to buy him out. The fee is not stated.
The captain who does not follow
A Counter-Strike team has five players. Four of Monte's five are now at Luminosity. The fifth, Gizmy, was its captain.
The British player gave his account on X. He wrote that the core of the team told him after the Major that they were leaving for Luminosity. He called it a sad ending for a team he had led since its beginning. HLTV's report of the signing announces no new team for him.
His place goes to lux. The Brazilian was Legacy's in-game leader, the player who calls the team's tactics during a match, and HLTV recalls that he led that team to its first international trophy at the CS Asia Championships in 2025. Legacy moved him to the bench in February to make room for another captain, arT, and said farewell to him on June 30, HLTV reported that day.
The choice has a logic that HLTV spelled out in that report: Luminosity, an organization with a past in Brazil, was aiming for an international roster with a Brazilian captain. The new five is therefore made of four players who have just spent a Major together and a leader who joins them from the bench of another team, more than four months after his last role there.

The "success at Cologne" in Maida's statement refers to the IEM Cologne Major, played in June. A Major is one of the championships sponsored by Valve, the publisher of the game.
Monte came out of Stage 2 of the tournament with three wins and two losses, HLTV reported. It lost to BetBoom on June 8 with a place in the next stage at stake, then beat paiN on June 9 to reach Stage 3, the last step before the playoffs.
There it beat PARIVISION on June 12, in a series decided on a third map. It then lost to Falcons after taking that series the distance, in HLTV's words. On June 14 it met The MongolZ with elimination at stake and lost two maps to one: a 13-9 win on Nuke, then a 7-13 defeat on Inferno and an 11-13 defeat on Dust2. afro was Monte's best player of that last series by HLTV's rating.
HLTV's later summary of the run counts wins over Legacy, paiN and PARIVISION, close losses to G2, The MongolZ and Falcons, and a final placing of 12th to 14th. Falcons went on to win the Major on June 21.
The ranking followed. Monte was 22nd on HLTV's ranking of June 8, during the tournament, 20th on June 22 and 18th on June 29.
From Columbus to a blank of nearly seven years
Luminosity's place in the history of the game rests on one team. In 2016, an all-Brazilian roster that included FalleN and coldzera won the MLG Columbus Major under its name, beating Natus Vincere in the final. HLTV recalls that the same players moved to SK afterward and won a second Major there.
Related readRiot opens applications for a new two-year VCT partnership cycleLuminosity kept fielding Brazilian lineups until 2019. On September 13 of that year, HLTV reported that the organization had confirmed the end of its lineup and was handing its places in two leagues, the ESL Pro League and ECS, to the players. The team was ranked 37th on HLTV's ranking of September 9, 2019. Its last group was built around steel, boltz and NEKIZ, with zakk as coach and HEN1 on the bench. Two more players, skullz and felps, were on loan from W7M and MIBR and stayed tied to those clubs. HLTV wrote at the time that the players planned to stay together, and the coach said the group was open to negotiation.
The 2019 announcement did not say whether Luminosity would come back with another roster. HLTV noted at the time that giving up the league places pointed the other way. From that report to the one of July 1, 2026, the gap is two and a half months short of seven years.
A brand bought back for a fraction of its price
Between the two rosters, the Luminosity name changed hands.
In 2019, Maida sold the company to Aquilini GameCo Inc. for 21.5 million Canadian dollars, more than US$16 million at the time, HLTV writes. In January 2026 he reacquired the Luminosity brand from Vertiqal Studios for 300,000 Canadian dollars, about US$212,000.
HLTV, June 22 and July 1, 2026. The 2019 figure is for the company, the 2026 figure for the brand alone.
The two transactions are not the same object: the first was a company, the second a brand. With that caution, the 2026 price is about 1.4 per cent of the 2019 one.
Top 20 from the first day, and a debut in Guangzhou
The new team does not start from zero in the rankings. HLTV writes that, with Monte's points, Luminosity begins inside the top 20 of the VRS, the Valve Regional Standings. That ranking is computed by the publisher and is used to invite teams to tournaments, which is why its updates are watched closely: HLTV noted during the Major that a place among the first 12 at the July update separates the teams invited to the top events from the others.
On HLTV's own ranking of June 29, Luminosity appears 18th, the position Monte held. Legacy, lux's former team, is 11th.
The first tournament was already on the calendar. Monte had been invited to the XSE Pro League in Guangzhou, China, an event with US$1 million on offer according to HLTV's preview of June 29. The match list of that preview shows Luminosity in Monte's place, with a first match on July 1 against Nemesis, the lowest-ranked of the 16 teams at 50th. Two teams of the field were in the top ten of the ranking used in that preview, 9z in eighth place and BetBoom in tenth. Legacy, M80 and MOUZ had accepted invitations and then withdrew, HLTV notes.
The format gives the new five several matches to settle. The 16 teams play a Swiss group stage, in which a team always meets an opponent with the same record: single maps in the early rounds, best-of-three series when a place in the playoffs or elimination is at stake. Eight teams reach the playoffs, which begin on July 9 in the gymnasium of the South China Agricultural University and end with a best-of-five final. HLTV's preview lists US$200,000 for the winner, along with a separate share paid to the clubs.
Two questions stay open in the announcement itself. Luminosity has not named a permanent coach, and it has not said what it paid for Rainwaker.
The name this team could hold, in the standings and everywhere else.
