Karmine Corp beat MVK Esports 3-0 in the Play-In final of the 2026 League of Legends World Championship on Sunday, October 18, and became the sixteenth and last team to reach the Swiss Stage. A draw held straight after the series put Karmine Corp in Pool 4 and gave it Anyone's Legend as its Round 1 opponent, according to GosuGamers, Strafe and Sheep Esports.

For Karmine Corp, a first-time Worlds participant, the result ended four days in which it had to survive a five-game series and then win the final without dropping a game. MVK Esports finished 17th and took US$50,000, according to GosuGamers. The Swiss Stage begins on Friday, October 23, in Allen, Texas.

GosuGamers, Strafe and Sheep Esports coverage of the Play-In final and the draw, October 18 and 19, 2026.

How the Play-In worked

The Play-In is the opening stage of Worlds. This year it had four teams, played as a double-elimination bracket in which every series was a best-of-five, and only the winner reached the Swiss Stage. In a double-elimination bracket, a team has to lose twice to be out.

The Play-In opened on October 15, according to the Dot Esports guide, and ended with the final on Sunday, October 18. That leaves the winner five days before its first Swiss Stage game on October 23. The four teams were Karmine Corp, MVK Esports, FURIA and Cloud9. Karmine Corp had qualified as the third seed of the European league, the LEC, according to Strafe. A Dot Esports guide to the field published on September 30 said that MVK came from the Pacific league, the LCP, through championship points, and that Cloud9 reached Worlds from the North American league, the LCS, by beating LYON 3-1 in the playoffs.

Karmine Corp's run was not straight. On October 15 it beat Cloud9 3-2 after trailing 1-2, which put it in the upper-bracket final. It swept MVK there on October 16. MVK, for its part, had opened with a 3-0 win over FURIA and dropped to the lower bracket after losing to Karmine Corp, where it beat FURIA again, 3-1, to earn a rematch in the final. Cloud9 was eliminated by FURIA 3-1 on the second day, according to GosuGamers.

The final, game by game

Karmine Corp won the first game with a 13-2 kill lead, according to GosuGamers and Strafe. The second game went the same way: it ended after about 27 minutes, and GosuGamers reported a gold lead of about 15,000, with jungler Yike invading MVK's side of the map and Canna gaining an early advantage on the top lane. The third game finished 25-12 in kills, with Caliste building a lead on the bot lane. GosuGamers added that Karmine Corp took the first Baron, the powerful neutral monster that gives a team a lasting bonus.

MVK did not take a game from Karmine Corp in either of their two series. It beat FURIA 3-0 in its opener and 3-1 in the lower bracket, but lost both series against Karmine Corp.

The draw: four pools

Worlds seeds the Swiss Stage with a draw held after the Play-In. Sixteen teams are placed in four pools, and the Round 1 slate pairs the pools in a fixed way: Pool 1 faces Pool 4, and Pool 2 faces Pool 3. The draw took place in Los Angeles, according to Insider Gaming.

Strafe, October 18, 2026, updated October 19.

Karmine Corp, as the Play-In winner, went into Pool 4 and drew Anyone's Legend from Pool 1. Sheep Esports listed the pairing as the top seed of the Chinese league, the LPL, against the third seed of the LEC, and described it as a rematch of an Esports World Cup meeting.

Worlds is not Karmine Corp's first big stage this year. GosuGamers reported that Dplus KIA won the 2026 Esports World Cup in League of Legends by beating Karmine Corp in the final, played on July 19. That puts a Pool 4 teammate in the same pool as Karmine Corp in the Swiss draw: Dplus KIA, the team that beat it in that final, sits beside it, and the pool rules mean the two cannot meet in Round 1, because Pool 4 teams play Pool 1 teams.

How the other fifteen teams got there

The Swiss Stage field is a mix of regional champions and teams that came through playoffs and qualification series. According to the Dot Esports guide published on September 30 and updated on October 6, South Korea's LCK sent Gen.G as its top seed after the league's final, with Hanwha Life Esports second, T1 third and Dplus KIA fourth after a 3-1 qualification series against KT Rolster. Hanwha Life Esports had won the Mid-Season Invitational in 2026, a result the guide said earned the LCK its extra slot.

China's LPL sent Anyone's Legend, the winner of Split 3, as its top seed. Bilibili Gaming finished second at the Mid-Season Invitational, while Top Esports beat Invictus Gaming 3-1 in the regional finals, and Invictus Gaming took the last LPL place.

In Europe, G2 Esports won LEC Summer 2026, and Movistar KOI beat Natus Vincere 3-1 in the playoffs. The Pacific league, the LCP, sent Team Secret Whales as the winner of Split 3 and CTBC Flying Oyster as a finalist. North America's LCS qualified Team Liquid Alienware, which beat FlyQuest 3-0, and LYON, which beat Shopify Rebellion 3-1 for the last spot. Brazil's LOS reached Worlds by beating LOUD 3-2 in the winners' bracket final of the CBLOL.

Round 1: who plays whom

Round 1 has one rule that shapes the slate: teams from the same region cannot meet, and every match is a best-of-one. The restriction applies only to Round 1, according to Strafe, so teams from the same region may meet in later rounds. Eight matches are scheduled for Friday, October 23, starting at 10 a.m. Pacific time with Gen.G against Invictus Gaming.

Karmine Corp's match is the fourth of the day. A single game leaves no room to recover from an early deficit, and that is the part of the format that makes Round 1 hard to read from rankings alone.

How the Swiss Stage works

A Swiss stage is a format with no fixed bracket. After each round, teams are matched against opponents with the same record, so a team with one win meets other teams with one win. At Worlds, 16 teams play up to five rounds. A team that reaches three wins advances to the knockouts, and a team that reaches three losses is eliminated. Eight teams advance, and teams generally do not meet each other twice.

The record rules fix how long a team can stay. A team that wins its first three games advances after three rounds with a 3-0 record. One that loses once on the way advances at 3-1 after four rounds. A team that reaches two wins and two losses plays a fifth round that decides whether it finishes 3-2 and advances or 2-3 and goes home.

Round 2 is drawn after the first day's results, with teams at 1-0 or 0-1, according to Sheep Esports. From there, matches in which a team can advance or be eliminated are best-of-three, and all others are best-of-one. The best-of-three series are played under Fearless Draft. In that draft mode, champions picked in an earlier game of a series cannot be picked again in the later games of that series, which pushes teams to prepare a wider pool of champions.

The calendar from here

The Swiss Stage runs at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas. The opening rounds are played from October 23 to 26, and the remaining Swiss matches from October 28 to 31, according to Strafe. The knockout stage is held from November 3 to 8, and the final takes place on November 14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

For Karmine Corp, the road to those knockout rounds starts with one game against Anyone's Legend. A win would be the first of the three needed to advance, and a loss would not end the run, because elimination comes only at three defeats.
