When the IEM Cologne Major opens on Tuesday, June 2, two of the sixteen teams on the first day's schedule will not have a single player who has been there before. SINNERS and Sharks arrive with five debutants each. They are the largest part of a group that HLTV, the reference news site for Counter-Strike, counted on May 31: 31 players who will appear at a Major for the first time.
A Major is one of the championships sponsored by Valve, the publisher of Counter-Strike 2. HLTV uses the word rookie in one sense only: a player making a first Major appearance, whatever the length of the career behind it. Three of the 31 are listed by HLTV as under 18. Others have waited years, and one of them is 28.
The count is in the middle of what the 32-team format has produced so far. It is well above the previous Major and well below the first one played with a field of this size.
HLTV, May 31, 2026. Austin was the first Major with 32 teams.
Five teams account for two thirds of the list
HLTV itself calls the figure inflated. Five teams have three or more first-time players, and together they bring 21 of the 31, a little over two thirds. SINNERS and Sharks are complete rookie line-ups. FUT and Monte have four debutants each, and 9z has three.
The other ten are spread over nine teams. THUNDER dOWNUNDER has two, and eight teams have one each. In all, 14 of the 32 teams field at least one first-time player, and 18 field none.
Each team plays with five, so the Major has 160 places in its starting line-ups. Thirty-one of them, about one in five, go to a player who has never been at this level of the calendar.

HLTV, May 31, 2026. Total: 31 players on 14 teams.
Three stages, from 17 rookies down to two
The Major is played in four phases, ESL, its organizer, said when it announced the event: three stages, then the playoffs. Sixteen teams start in Stage 1, eight more enter in Stage 2 and the last eight in Stage 3, according to the roster list ESL announced on April 22 and HLTV reported that day. The teams were invited through the Valve Regional Standings, the ranking the publisher computes from results.
The rookies are concentrated at the start of the tournament, and their number falls at each entry point.
- Stage 1: 17 rookiesSixteen teams open the Major. SINNERS and Sharks alone bring ten of the debutants.
- Stage 2: 12 rookiesEleven of them are on three teams: FUT, Monte and 9z. Astralis has the twelfth, ryu.
- Stage 3: 2 rookiessoulfly of Aurora and a MOUZ player under 18 start with the last eight teams to enter.
Stage 1 is described in the guide HLTV published on May 31. It uses the Swiss system, in which a team always meets an opponent with the same record of wins and losses, over five rounds. The first two rounds are best-of-one, a single map; the matches that send a team through or send it home are best-of-three, won with two maps. Eight teams advance and join the eight that were waiting.
For SINNERS the debut comes at the very start: the team meets FlyQuest in one of the first two games on June 2. Sharks play HEROIC the same day, a match with six rookies in it, the five Sharks players and nilo on the other side. BETBOOM, with d1Ledez, face Gaimin Gladiators.
The two names of Stage 3 are a first of their own. A team that enters there is, in HLTV's words, three wins from the playoffs. HLTV notes that this is the first time since the Valve Regional Standings and the 32-team field were introduced that Stage 3 holds more than one rookie. In Budapest there was a single one, kyousuke, who had joined Falcons before that event.

The prospects who arrive together
HLTV keeps a monthly ranking of young players it calls Prospects. The edition of April 23 sets out the rules: 50 names, players under 21, with limits on how much top-level experience they may already have, starting with fewer than 50 maps at the biggest events. The order comes from nine factors, weighted toward recent form and results at offline tournaments.
Nine players of that ranking make their Major debut in Cologne, HLTV writes, and they are present in all three stages. Most of the 31 rookies are not on the list at all.
FUT supplies nearly half of the nine: four players. HLTV gives the places of three of them in the ranking as third for dem0n, sixth for Krabeni and 13th for cmtry. The others named with a rank are koala of Sharks, 18th, gr1ks of BIG, 26th, and Zero of TYLOO, 42nd. The remaining three prospects are under 18. HLTV adds that the FUT players will leave the list after the Major.
FUT is the team where the debut says least about the level. The line-up won PGL Bucharest on April 11, beating Astralis 3-1 in a best-of-five final, a series played to three map wins. HLTV called it the first notable trophy on LAN, meaning played in a venue instead of online, since the organization entered Counter-Strike nearly a year earlier, and it named cmtry the tournament's most valuable player the same day. The site had put the team's average age at just over 19 at ESL Pro League Season 23, earlier in the year, where FUT finished fourth. The fifth member, lauNX, is not a rookie.

Long waits and second chances
Not every first Major comes early. At 28, beastik of SINNERS is the oldest of the rookies whose age HLTV gives. He and his teammate SHOCK, 25, came close once before. HLTV recalls the last match of a qualifier for the PGL Antwerp Major, where the pair led 14-11 on the deciding map, Inferno, two rounds from a place, before Bad News Eagles came back and took it. SINNERS secured their place in Cologne on April 5, as the last tournaments that counted for the invitations ended, according to HLTV's reports of that day.
Monte is built on a different kind of patience. Its line-up has two British players, Gizmy and AZUWU, and three who used to play for other organizations: afro for Fnatic, Rainwaker for Liquid and Bymas for MOUZ. Bymas is the only one of the five who is not a rookie. He returns to the event for the first time since his one earlier Major, with MOUZ at PGL Stockholm in 2021.
At 9z, the organization has been to a Major before, twice in 2022, but none of its three rookies was there. HUASOPEEK joined in 2023 and luchov in November; meyern is the team's AWPer, the player who uses the sniper rifle.

HLTV reported on May 31 that the team begins the Major without S1ren, and its account of the rookies notes that d1Ledez had been kept away from earlier events by visa issues, with FL4MUS playing in his place during the weeks before.
No rookie from North America
HLTV points out one absence on the list: the North American subregion has no rookie at this Major.
The two complete rookie line-ups come from different continents: HLTV's Stage 1 guide lists SINNERS under a European flag and Sharks under Brazil's. Australia has two debutants, asap and TjP, both with THUNDER dOWNUNDER, where they play alongside dexter, aliStair and Liazz. asap joined that team in October 2025. TYLOO, listed under China, has one rookie, Zero, who is 20.
Several of the teams with rookies sit low in the world order. In HLTV's ranking of May 25, printed in its Stage 1 guide, THUNDER dOWNUNDER is 70th, the lowest place among the sixteen teams of Stage 1. Sharks are 50th, BIG 38th and SINNERS 32nd.
How Cologne compares with Austin and Budapest
HLTV sets the figure against the two previous Majors of the 32-team era. Austin, the first of them, had 42 first-time players. Budapest had 19. Cologne, with 31, has 12 more than Budapest and 11 fewer than Austin.
Without the five teams that bring three or more, the count would be ten, on nine teams. That is the sense of HLTV's remark that the total is inflated: the number of rookies depends less on how many young players break through than on which teams, as whole line-ups, make the list of invitations.
The invitations themselves were fixed nearly two months ago: HLTV reported the deciding update of the standings on April 6. ESL had said in August 2025 that the first Valve Regional Standings update of April 2026 would decide the 32 teams, and that places are shared between regions according to how each performed at the 2025 winter Major.
From the first match to June 21
The opening day has eight matches, all in Stage 1, and every team of the 17 Stage 1 rookies is on the schedule HLTV published. Six of the eight matches have at least one debutant in them: SINNERS against FlyQuest, MIBR against THUNDER dOWNUNDER, B8 against TYLOO, HEROIC against Sharks, BETBOOM against Gaimin Gladiators and BIG against Liquid. B8 against TYLOO has one on each side.
The tournament runs until June 21. The last eight teams play the playoffs at the LANXESS arena, with quarterfinals on June 18 and 19, semifinals on June 20 and the grand final on June 21, according to ESL's announcement. The prize pool is US$1.25 million.
